I thought they still spelled out formulas in complete sentences in those days :-)

Okay, so it's a HISTORY up til the mid 1900's ... might it still be apropo? If the date is problematic, try something more modern;
[attachment=5167] or [attachment=5168] or [attachment=5169]
as well as the older but relevant a History of Mathematical Notation vI or vII.

No, I would not call it problematic: probably makes the book all the more interesting, especially for people who think that mathematical notations and conventions are, or should be, set in stone.
