Full Version: HP 50g - SD Card format error, another BUG?
You're currently viewing a stripped down version of our content. View the full version with proper formatting.
Hi,
I bought a new 2GB card today and I wanted to format it on the HP 50g.
It starts formating but after few seconds there comes a popup window saying there is a format error.
I tried on the PC and everything works fine.
Also checked for errors and everything is fine.
Did someone got this error before? Is that a known error?
Or do I do something wrong?
Or do I need to learn RPL for that? Smile

EDIT:
I just have read in the quick start guide that comes with the HP 50g (German) and it says:
- Only SD cards are accepted with max. capacity 2GB
- SDHC cards are NOT supported.
- FAT32 is supported but there will be a 2 Sec. lag at Boot Time.
- The HP 50g, in the case of a SD card greater than 1GB, it will display a free capacity lower than 1GB but you have full access to the 2GB.
Make sure it is an SD card and not an SDHC card. Also the card needs to formatted in the FAT16 format. You may need to use a utility on your computer to do that although the calculator should have been able to do it. I see some references that FAT32 may also be supported but I can't confirm that.

I don't know if learning RPL would help with this problem, but it wouldn't hurt Smile

Thank you Steve,

The card is a SD not SDHC (by the way, very difficult to get one now a days).
Yes, the HP 50g recognises the FAT32 but is very slow at Start-up.
Without a card in slot, it starts even quicker.

Seems that "FORMAT" on the HP 50g only works on 1GB cards.

What I am real concerned about is about the bug´s . A machine that has errors, say not working a it should by specification , makes me don´t trust it. From my experience, one bug at one place causes other erros in other places.
So, for it is like "you never know". Smile

About that RPL learning, I will think about that when I am retired, that might be a good exercise, instead of playing Sudoku. Smile

You could write a program in RPL implementing Dancing Links to solve a Sudoko. No reason to wait until you're retired.

Cheers

It looks like you found your answer. An undocumented limitation of the HP 50g format command? I misunderstood and thought you could not access the SD card at all.

Maybe I will take up Sudoku when I retire, instead of playing with RPL Smile

There are several sudoku solvers for the 50g on hpcalc.org. Smile
