Just received a beautifully restored HP67 but have a problem reading clipped cards.
They all (including the standard pack cards) give an error. Unclipped cards write and read without any problems. Anyone a suggestion?

Perhaps the card reader motor has a slightly different speed than original and cannot read the prerecorded cards, but write and read new cards.

The
old 65 Notes contained a novel approach to R/W a
clipped magnetic card: a worn / used/ etc. magnetic card was
trimmed on the right to
MATCH the vertical profile on the left of the target clipped card. The
trimmed card was then gently inserted in the card reader slot from the left and the
clipped card was inserted from the right. I used this technique, it works! If you have access to the old
Notes, the article is thorough and replete with illustrations, etc. If not, I'll elaborate in follow on dialog.
I also simply
pinched a small piece of tape to the
clipped corner with the same success. Both methods worked for me and should help you troubleshoot the clipped vs unclipped mystery.
BEST!

That's an interesting hypothesis. If you have a card to spare, perhaps you can clip one that is currently reading OK and see if it still reads correctly?
If so, as Bernhard notes, perhaps it's an issue of "old recording" vs. "new recording" rather than "clipped" vs. "not clipped."
If a clipped card reader problem (and since it is restored), it would appear maybe the clipped card detector spring, one of the 5 finger springs under the card reader assembly is bent, or the ball that is pressed down to engage the detector spring is missing.
You never know how 'restored' a card reader is!
