On the spreadsheet column headers there are some lowercase labels like g,l,m,z, the rest are uppercase, was that in error or is it significant somehow? The emulator shows the same

No, it's just a means of avoiding conflicts with built in variables G0-G9, L0-L9, M0-M9, and Z0-Z9 (graphics, lists, matrices, complex numbers respectively).
