Recently, I saw a picture of a 41C with a power supply plugged into its side but neither batteries nor a "power pack" inserted in its back. It was claimed that the calc works this way. Can that be true? I've never seen such a configuration before.

Yes, this was planned by HP but they never released the related power adapter, this was done by a third party company. See this thread for more details.
