I opened a new 30b the other day to make a WP 34S. I had purchased the calc just after it was announced at HHC 2014 that the 30b had been discontinued.
I was surprised to discover that the calculator had only one battery contact.
So it looks like BT1 is a spare!
BTW, HP Calculator Support won't replace the calculator, even though it's an obvious manufacturing defect, because the warranty expired two months ago.

Is it working OK on a single battery?

I believe so. In addition, the 20b schematic states that "Battery Holder-One is optional".
