Hi

Is there only a single version of the v3.x overlay?

I bought one back in May 2012 when I think v3.x was quite new and I'm wondering if I can upgrade form there to v3.3 without needing to change overlay.

You are safe to upgrade. All version 3 keyboard layouts are identical.
