The printers contacted me today to say that they can't spiral bind the manual, as it is too thick.

So the options are:

- Perfect bound paperback (about the same price as spiral bound)
- Hard back with cloth cover (~£16)
- Split into two volumes (~£16)

I've asked if they can do a discount on the splitting-up option, but they seem pretty rigid about quotes/prices, so I'm not too hopeful... anyway, I'll post when I have a reply.

Thoughts?

In this case my preference would be split in two spiral bound. Presumably the ~£16 is in lieu of the original £10?

Yep, £16 would be the new overall cost.

I think splitting is the way to go. Being able to open the manuals flat is invaluable. Once I've heard back from the printers, I think I'll send out an e-mail to see if we have agreement on the new cost.

Two volumes spiral bound are more practical than hardcover even if the latter looks sleeker. In for 10, in for 16, or so the saying goes....

I agree to go with two volumes spiral bound, it will be easier to use and btw this is what was offered previously on hpcalc.org.

I also agree for the two volumes spiral bound.

If you split it into 2 volumes, let me suggest that you include the table of contents and the index in BOTH of them.

Another option is to try to find a printer who can print it on thinner paper.

I'm not sure if usual "copy shop" paper of less than 80g will hold up in (hopefully daily use.

I was going to split the contents/index between the two volumes, but I suppose including both in their entirety in both volumes is better.

I'm also hoping to split at chapter 4, which would make the first volume larger than the second... I'm not sure how the hpcalc.org version pages were distributed. I asked the printers if ~420 pages is okay for binding. I haven't heard back yet though.

While we're waiting, if any late comers want to order a copy of the manuals, please PM me.

My split that I used for the manuals when I made them:

Volume 1: Table of Contents, Chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, Appendix A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, Index

Volume 2: Chapters 3, 4, Appendix I, J

It's pretty even and seems to be a reasonable grouping (Volume 1 is mostly programming information and volume 2 is mostly command references).
