Hi Dave,

many thanks for the combined info:-)

I currently have an A and a B drive.

The A drive had the (I think) typical problem of a nonfunctional disk case lift mechanism. It turned out to be a mechanical problem. One of the slide bolts on the right side wasn't sliding due to missing lube. You couldn't insert or eject a disk.

After applying some lube to the said part it worked fine again.

From the mechanical construction I assume this is one of the main reasons for drive mechanism failures, since this bolt doesn't have a real bearing but only a rivet holding it in place.

The B drive would work fine, if there wasn't the spindle motor which revs up when trying to access the disk. Since it looks like a direct drive motor (I may be wrong) , and the driver bolt in place, I don't know why the motor just hauls permanently instead of simply positioning the disk and stopping.

Any ideas?
Hi Raymond,

Sorry, I'm not an expert when it comes to repairing the Sony drives. I was lucky to find a 9114A and am looking for a 9114B. In order to keep my collection working I acquired two 9122D drives. The one with the "A" type drives had already been used for spares. The "B" type drive yielded two good drives! When I find a 9114B I plan on trying to get one good "A" drive from the two bad ones.
In the mean time perhaps I can help you out.

Dave
We have tested and confirmed.
The HP9114B drive will also work with Sony Disk Drive "MP-F52W-30".
Specs for Sony MP-F52W drives are here.

Though the MP-F52W-20 nor the MP-F52W-30 are seen there, we tried the -30 and it works fine.
