Has anyone had success connecting a 49g to a PC via USB using a serial to USB adapter? Which one?

Thanks!

Quote:back to the nineties with a HP 38g and vm
I recently adopted a hp38g calculator.

I am using an prolific 2303 usb to serial adapter attached to a win8.1 machine.

Then there is a xp virtual machine under virtual box version 4x.

The hp comm 2 program runs fine with the serial port on both the host
and the guest os set to com1.

Files are being happily transferred both ways between the hp38g and the vm os.

The hp38g and the hp49g can use the same 10 serial connector.

The pl2303 usb to serial adapter is about 12 years old and came with
xp and vista drivers.

There are current prolific pl2303 and ftdi usb to serial adapters available.
Be warned there are some adapters with "counterfeit chips" installed.

Here is a link from the basic stamp folks at parallax.com:

You can also check the other usual sites eg. digikey.com, amazon.com, etc.

I used virtual box 4.3.4 and a winxp virtual machine under win 8.1.

Cheers
I used a home made cable, but recently bought a HP 38G/39G/49G serial cable from Samson Cables. They are reasonably priced on eBay. It has a DB9 connector to plug into a PC serial port (or a USB-serial adapter).
Thank you Liamtoh and Ian for your suggestions!
