You'd post a reasonably convincing case for having more storage.
Our current default quota is 3MB. I had hoped that was large enough that hardly anyone would run into it. At the old forum, we had 2 users in the 2-4MB range, with the average user being around 10-20K. On the new forum, we're averaging around 50K/user so far, probably because attachments are simpler to upload now.
This new forum is less than a year old, so I'm still monitoring it to see how it goes in terms of DB size, bandwidth, performance etc. But we can probably support at least a few users with ~6MB quotas.

Now I understand what the other people are doing - they just use url pointers to image repositories in other portals.
That explains how they manage to post unlimited number of images and sizes, without even consuming their quotas!
I can live with that solution as well.
