That guy's dad was really lucky, keeping the machine plugged into the AC adapter when the battery pack was dead. That usually fries the ACT in these machines because the battery is part of the voltage regulation circuitry. No battery = no voltage regulation = stupid high voltage hitting the ACT = fried ACT.
