Full Version: Has anything ever come out of the ideas for a new HP 39gII firmware?

Some 6 or 7 years ago, there were several threads on this forum discussing a possible new firmware for the HP 39gII, like

https://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap...ead=232259

https://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap...ead=227741

Has anything ever come out of these discussions? Is there anything to build on, like a toolchain, or a Hello World?

(The reason why I'm asking is that surplus 39gII are now being sold on AliExpress for less then EUR 20. I couldn't resist, and I'm impressed by the hardware, and underwhelmed by the software...)
I can't find it for 20€ in ALi ...
you can get me the link ?
and that's how I'm waiting with you with a new firmware Smile
I've already found it!!!!

It seems you can't look at individual product pages on AliExpress without logging in now?
Welcome to the world of amazing capabilities of the HP-39gii for €20!
Hello,

Well, the 39GII was always designed as a cheap calculator...
20$ is amazing value for the price!

Of course, we all know that Prime came out of the 39GII...

Well, the same is the time to retake it. I have seen that we have not sdk and not firmware source. What are the possibilities that are viable?
Good afternoon
I have a doubt
Can you install the applets of the hp 39gs in the 39 gii?
is that I can't find anything from hp 39 gii, not even in hpcalc.org
especially interested in Tim's periodic table applet

thanks

It's not possible to install hp39gs aplets into the 39gii. The underlying code in each calc is fundamentally different.
Hello,

The HP39gs is a successor to the HP48GX series. By this I mean that they are based on the same RPL based code base and share a LOT of common code...

The HP39gII is a completely new machine, made to resemble the 39gs in it's UI, but completely different under the hood. As a result, the "compatibility" is only at a UI level, but not with any of the internals.

it has arrived! I paid only € 14 with the welcome discount on aliexpress. I just unboxed (only a small bag for the craziness and a lot of uniball) and inserted the batteries. now that my phone has the type c port i have won a micro usb cable.
I am sorry that the low sef discharge rechargeable batteries do not work, I hope that it consumes little and I will use alkalines. it is very strange to insert the batteries in parallel. on the side there are grooves for a lid but I have not received any lid. for all the rest I will dedicate myself to the manual.

A slide-on cover is typically included with every new 39gII, but for € 14, I suppose you can't really complain; unless the item listing specifically mentioned it, I'd think you likely won't get them to send you one, but it's still a great deal.

I absolutely don't complain! I will look for an alternative case but more easily it will stay on the desk. I didn't know how it was delivered in the original packaging. my exemplar looks really new, it had a very thin film stuck on the screen and the keyboard, it seems never used but the packaging was really handcrafted. it could be part of a stock intended for schools or similar.

Big Grin So, I think I am the winner:

5pcs × 8 GBP of each + 12.85 GBP shipping = 52.85 GBP / 5 pcs = 10.57 GBP each.

It was only 1 pcs on eBay, I have asked maybe she has another one, and she had 5 pcs. (I kept 2 pcs only, before you start to attack me with PMs Wink )

I have been a fan of HP calculators since 1974. I have several models and despite all the bugs, the hp 39 GII is fantastic. The latest firmware version I found and installed is rev. 19148 (30 / 0ct / 2013). HP prime programs are almost fully compatible with the 39GII. I installed some chemistry programs and with some changes, they worked perfectly. Some problems encountered:
1) The "CASE" instruction does not work.
2) The instruction "MAKEMAT" when used I, J in the expression, uses them inverted (J, I)
3) The integral calculation does not accept some values, such as the integral from 2 to the square root of 20. It is not reliable.
4) Some powers of complex numbers give wrong results eg (0.1,0.2) ^ 3 gives totally wrong result
- do (0.1,0.2) * (0.1,0.2) * (0.1,0.2). It is not reliable.
There must be other mistakes that I will discover over time. The programs run very quickly.
For 14$ you get a lot of headaches, gripes, trouble and lost lifetime. You'll find yourself being busy exploring all the bugs instead of doing anything useful.

Where it shines is processor performance and its hi-res greyscale screen.
There is a experimental OS for 39gii.
