Can the Woodstock series be powered without the battery pack installed?

Not from the charger w/o battery pack. Will toast the ACT chip

Yes, but NOT with the supplied charger. Otherwise the delicate circuits will be destroyed by overvoltage. If you want to power it without a battery pack you either cut the cable of the charger and connect it to a 2.5 to 3V regulated DC power supply or you connect that power supply to the battery contacts inside the calculator. Watch the polarity!
