They are usually used behind a filter to obscure the unlit segments.

That is true, and it improves legibility drastically. But kind of hides the charme of the tubes...
Ok, it looks like the IN-12 nixies are out of the game. sorry Etienne :-|.
I now have the difficult task of sourcing IGP-17 displays. I did not find any more so far, just the one that is on its way here already. Or I'll have to go with the IV-27M even though there is much less interest in that.
Maybe we have Ukrainian members here who can help find displays? The displays are made in Ukraine.
Since portrait and landscape are a very close call, I will simply try and judge which fits better, when I have all the components.

Huge display with Lixies?

Digits are about 65 mm high.
Somewhat expensive though.
I wonder if a miniature (single color) version would still be legible.
