If free42 would release a new version that breaks compatibility, and all has to be written again, with even less functions because it is new (for example, no solver, no matrix, etc.) people won't use it so quickly.

Free42 has slightly augmented HP42s catalog and kept backward compatibility, not to mention the year-after-year polishing job, which has turned this app into a reference.
The point is whether Thomas Okken has any plans to move forward with a 4-level stack by means of a bigger screen. This has been heartly welcome by SM's DM42 beta testers.
Embedding XCAS seems major surgery, doesn't it?

Why would I do that?
Not going to happen. Not while I'm in charge, anyway.

I have no such plans; anyone who want that bigger screen will have to get a DM42 (or use Byron Foster's 42s iOS app). Of course anyone is welcome to fork Free42 and add big-screen support, that's the point of the GPL. :-)

Was an example to say "stability and maturity are important in a field that does not change every year". Or better, considering the majority of math equations /systems used.

It would be already great if the sales figures would be stable.

I don't think so. Big players need to show up growth every quarter to their stake holders. No matter how healthy an EBITDA looks, who would buy shares of a company with 0% growth year after year?

Same argument applies to every business unit in a big corporation. Which CEO wants to keep investing in a unit with 0% growth?

I, like the rest of this forum's members, feel really attached to HP calcs, and we want to see HP on top of the game again, as the leader of yore.

No calc is free of imperfections, no matter who is the manufacturer. Nevertheless, the HP50g and HP Prime did set new landmarks. I am sure we all wish nothing but the best for the calc business unit at HP in any forecoming products :0)

"Armchair-CEO #1 player dixit" ;0)

Well then it would be unrealistic. In a certain market expecting infinite (or constant) grow is unlikely. With finite resources is straightforward absurd to think that one can grow indefinitely.

We are not on the cartesian plane.

... I wish my Chinese boss would think like you. I have been working for far-east-based engineering companies these last 9 years, and any growth below 10% is seen as almost flat and useless.

Some years ago I was with a Korean company; our HQ sold out the business unit I was with precisely because of that. I then joined the culprits, a Chinese company growing at CAGR 30% last 5 years.

RE: New HP-42S Replacement?
Yes but it depends on the market. It is not that all the market are equal.

Market for space traveling and exploration? Maybe it is still too early now but likely there will be the need in the future.

Market for big container ships? Sure! Globalization!

Market for slide rules? Very a little (nowadays). Maybe in the 1930 it was huge (and maybe it will be huge in the future), but it is unlikely to expect constant grow for the slide rule market at the moment.

Also, personal opinion: if the shareholders think that constant grow is always achievable in whatever condition, I'd think that they are not that good in math. Like someone playing the lotto.

Said that, I think the market for advanced calculators like nspire, prime & co is quite stable unless India/China open up.

RE: New HP-42S Replacement?
You are absolutely right when you say "market is stable", but this doesn't mean your market share should be stable too.

Imagine HP nails next model and sales surpass all expectations. In this case, HP calc business unit's sales would soar, because their market share would have increased... in the very same stable market we are living year after year.

Believe me, you can't mention an stable market to a boss from the Far East. I have seen some colleagues' heads rolling after repeating that "stable market" mantra too many times :.!

Not being an HP employee, I cannot give a genuine HP Blank Stare™, but we all signed an HP Confidential Disclosure Agreement at HHC 2017, so here's my first order approximation of one:

Is it the HP-67CX Anniversary Edition?
http://www.hpmuseum.org/item/product.htm

I'm particularly excited by the programming features:
- 4 billion program steps with an optional SD card.
- The SD card can't be written externally: all programs must be entered via keyboard or mag card.
- 4 billion numbered data registers
- 36 program labels (A-Z, 0-9)
- Programs displayed via keycode. E.g.:
Code:
348372293: 34h 32 61    @ Step 348372293, n(hold) g 4, which is the inverse spherical hyperbolic matrix sine function

It's basically an HP-41, without the expansion ports, but with a lot more memory, it's faster, and it has all the HP-15C functionality as well (matrix operations, complex numbers, numerical root finder, numerical integrator), and named variables (not just numbered registers). It's a very well-rounded calculator.

The biggest "con" is the lack of I/O; apart from the keyboard and display, all it has in the I/O department is a one-way infrared printer interface. No bi-directional infrared like the HP-48 series, no serial port, no HP-IL. The only way to get programs into it is typing them.

what a synthesis, Thomas Smile :really effective

Here's one wildly uninformed guess:

a Prime firmware update / applet for a 42S Emulator...

Will your NDA clauses allow confirmation of the wrong guess?

Cheers,

RE: New HP-42S Replacement?
A NDA for a 42 prime app? Nah...

Why bother? DM42 is around the corner....

Fast, big screen, connectivity, memory...no bugs....no bad keys ...good support...

I was excited at the start, but after such mistery and as someone already said before, HP won't make it better than SM + free42, I am more excited in recieving my Pil-Box....

Whichever comes, it will be welcome... Smile Smile
