Assuming an advanced display of the 42S which could be 26 chars by 6 ore more(*) lines, this would be a very reasonable resolution for a non graphical calculator. Don't compare it with current smartphones Smile or the Prime

(*) 6 lines or more could be:
1. the complete stack
2. Last X ?
3. One permanent menu line, perhaps one line for sub-menus

If you compare the preliminary layout with a real 42, you'll see that the space for the keyboard is almost the same size as on the original. All of the wasted real estate on the 42S is now used for the large screen, that's really clever. Provided the price is somewhere in the magnitude Massimo has announced, I'll definitely buy one. I don't need any calculator any more, but I surely must have this one Smile

Sorry, I can't imagine how a landscape format could come even close. Sad

If you read details above (and/or print the attached images) you'll find this new machine is actually a bit smaller than the original Pioneer machines. So it's very portable, but with a much larger screen, which can display all 4 levels plus the soft-menus. I have no inside information, but it's fully obvious that to act as a '42, it must include the soft-menus, and they surely would not display only 3 levels.

I had looked at the image and held it up against my 27S, which on screen was just a tad smaller than the DM42 silhouette (2 mm on each side) -- hence my comment -- now I've repeated the experiment and realized that the silhouette was in fact ~156 mm long rather than the 144 mm described. Mea culpa, measure twice before cutting! OK I'm completely sold.

RE: DM42
Perhaps the extra display space can be used for displaying all 30+ decimal digits of a number (even if only for a SHOW). It's a bit frustrating (using the Free42 emulator now and it will be the same with the DM42) to have to jump through hoops to extract the extra digits that you know are there...

Still, very exciting prospects whatever comes out.

I hope they will be more precisely positioned in the final product. For example the letter A is closer to the 1/x key, whereas it is related to the Σ+ key.

RE: DM42
A 42s with a 4 or 5 line display AND a permanent menu line?!

You had me at 3. This is what is called in English "an embarrassment of riches".

A useful program capability would be; to be able to prompt on all lines simultaneously, but that can be worked around. I remember on my 42 I just kept track of the three or four things I was entering.

Wonderful! Now I just need to start thinking of how I justify buying another calculator to my wife... Any ideas?

Simply ask your wife: You have only 2 feet and it is very unlikely that the number increases. Why do you need more than 10 pairs of shoes? ;-)

Ángel should have asked where's the GOLD key...

I may ask: what is the purpose of the TOP.FCN command, now that there are dedicated soft keys for the menus?

I like this DM-42 :-)

I'm guessing it will be "remain". I can understand why one would want to leave though...

All that nonsense about making the Greek save just enough so they won't improve their sittuation but don't declare bankruptcy either.
It doesn't help the Greek and everyone else has to pay. And for what? Just so a couple of banks can continue to make a fortune out of the sittuation?!?

Yeah. So J-F was right: where's the GOLD (key)?

My point exactly, I hope this is just a concept layout and the final version has a proper GOLD/YELLOW SHIFT key on it!

Can't wait for it!

Yes, indeed I want one ASAP. Ok, two really.

I think TOP.FCN is still needed to bring the default functions back to the menu-area display, which could at any moment still be displaying a menu. I presume that the reason for separating the F-keys from the top row is to allow TOP.FCN functions to be accessible even when menus are active. Just a guess, however the good news is that even if this guess is totally wrong, we should all know relatively soon.

And I agree the shift-key MUST be painted GOLD; a small thing, but an important small thing.
