Whether or not they'll support people flashing their own firmware builds is a separate question (which is addressed by GPLv3, but Free42 is licensed under GPLv2), but I would be surprised if they didn't support that as well.

Michael's intention is to build the core system. That is, adapt Free42 to the screen, the I/O (USB, SDCARD, IR) as a basis for further development. The objective is to have the "community" share their efforts to enhance on that with others.

Disclaimer: That is what I understood from our conversation. I may be completely wrong. Time will tell.
