Emulator of HP 50g with #2.16 ROM
I have downloaded an HP 50g emulator at the following link:

http://www.calculatrices-hp.com/index.ph...emulateurs

With it, when I use the VERSION command, I get:

2: "Version HP50-C Revision #2.16"
1: "Copyright HP 2009"

But I've never found this ROM version. Does it really exist? Where can I find it?

RE: Emulator of HP 50g with #2.16 ROM
Just downloaded the emulator & VER sows 4.20060919, the same as on my real 50G running version 2.10-7.

Oh! The emulator seems unable to store a library in port 2!

You already got it - in the emulator:-)
IIRC you can upgrade a real 50g from another 50g, be it real or emulated;-)

Great !

What are new in this release ?

Can we use the .bin file to directly upgrade an HP49G+/50G ?

( C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\HP50g Virtual Calculator\data\ROM\rom50.bin )

RE: Emulator of HP 50g with #2.16 ROM
I also do not know about a ROM version 2.16, this is interresting.

Neither on the HP website nor on hpcalc.org is there any rom newer than 2.15 (May 2015)

With the 48S/SX/G/GX there used to be a "ROMDUMP" procedure or "Wizard, but since the advent of the flash rom and the distribution on the net of ROM updates, dumping the rom is not required anymore and I have not seen the procedure for dumping the 50g ROM, but it may very well be possible. In theory, you should then be able to dump the ROM from the emulator and install it onto the calculator, but I am afraid more advanced users should comment on this topic.

RE: Emulator of HP 50g with #2.16 ROM
I downloaded and installed the HP50gVirtualCalculatorSetup_3_1_30 file.
I really like the display and size on this emulator. It's larger and darker than the previous emulator I was using.

I'm having a problem loading libraries, though. I tried to copy a *.hp library I have and when I do, I am getting an error message "Cannot load an empty file".

Per the emulator help that came with it, I tried to follow the instructions thinking that maybe I could load libraries if I use Virtual USB Port.

HP Virtual Calculator-to-HP50 Connectivity Kit Communications
1. In HP Virtual Calculator, select Calculator > Preferences. This displays the Preferences window.

2. Choose Expose this HP Virtual Calculator instance as COMn from any of the virtual port drop-down lists, that is, the Virtual IrDA Port, Virtual RS232 Port or Virtual USB Port drop-down list. (Note that n will vary according to the ports that are free on your PC.)

3. Click Save.

4. Open the HP50 Calculator Connectivity Kit.

5. From the Connect using drop-down list, choose the port that you exposed at step 2 above.

6. Click the Quick connect to the calculator button.

HP Virtual Calculator and the connectivity kit should now be connected. Consult the user manual for the calculator for instructions on how to transmit data.

The Virtual USB Port is defaulted to Disabled and it won't let me change it.

This is too bad as it seems like a great emulator. If anyone figures this out, please let me know.

Jim

The actual origin of the emulator appears to be here:

http://h41268.www4.hp.com/live/index_e.a...tors_cc/dt

Quite interesting, while the file names (HP50gVirtualCalculatorSetup_3_1_30.zip and HP50gVirtualCalculatorSetup_3_1_30.exe) suggest an emulator version of 3.1.30, the help screen displays version 3.1.29 only.

The included HP 50g ROM 2.16 file ROM50.BIN has a date stamp of 2012-04-26 (1.802.255 bytes).

The included driver info file HPSS400.INF (version 1.1.1.5 as of 2006-09-12, first published 2007-02-23 and dated 2012-04-26) is for an USB device residing under USB VID=03F0h PID=0221h (apparently the HP StreamSmart 400).

This old newgroup post describes the ROMUPLOAD procedure (although for uploading an EMU-49 emulator firmware 2.09 into a physical HP 49G via serial cable):

(I haven't found any time to try updating a physical HP 50g with firmware 2.16 myself yet.)

It would be interesting to know if the HP StreamSmart 410 uses the same USB VID (vendor ID) and PID (product ID) as the StreamSmart 400. Perhaps the above mentioned driver is actually meant for the 410 as well, despite its filename?

This can be found out by investigating an .INF file known to support the StreamSmart 410 (as it should be on the CD coming with the StreamSmart 410) or by connecting a physical StreamSmart 410 to a PC and checking its USB device properties with tools like USBView, lsusb, or looking at properties>details in the device manager under Windows.

Anyone?

Greetings,

Matthias

RE: Emulator of HP 50g with #2.16 ROM
Since Tim remembered that the HP 50g firmware 2.16 is meant to support the StreamSmart 410 (rather than the StreamSmart 400) but wasn't sure about it any more, it would be great, if owners of a HP 50g (with firmware 2.15), who actually tried to use it with a StreamSmart 400, or users of the HP 50g Virtual Calculator (version 3.1.29/3.1.30 with firmware 2.16), who tried to use it with either a StreamSmart 400 or 410, could report their findings. Did it work for you or did you run into problems?

Hi Jim, and all you folks, I'm new to this forum.
Some day ago I too began tampering with this emulator on a win7/64 PC, did the same you did and got into the same deadlock.
So I tried to install in an older box running XP SP3, and there it worked some way before crashing into BSOD.
The relevant fact was that in this case I had the emulators' virtual port exposed as per the Manual, I could see it on connection kit and have both connected for a while before they crashed into BSOD.
After restarting the PC and emulator I went on Device Manager, did a device rescan
and could see a COM12 new port, confirming the virtual port creation.
Then I came back to the win7/64 and, after a reinstall, I looked there for a similar device. None. Went on the installed programs and saw "HP Virtual Calculator Port 3.1.11", and guessed the problem was there.
So I went to the Program Files(86)\Hewelett-Packard\HP50g Virtual Calculator\setup and tried to manually launch "HPVirtualCalculatorPortSetup.exe". That time I came up with a system warning message saying it was impossible to install a win-32 driver onto win-64 system. This led me thinking a an x-64 driver was needed. I wasn't then able to reproduce the situation for confirm.
BTW, I then attached my true HP-50g to the PC, via the USB cable, and it was detected and connected with Connx (HP 48g-49g-50g series Calculator Connectivity Kit) on "USB Calculator Port". I closed Connx, restarted Xmodem on the true 50g and launched the virtual one. This time, on Calculator/Preferences, a "virtual USB Port" named HP9xG+ DEVICE was available and Device Manager sees it. Now both the real and the virtual HP50g are in Xmodem server waiting for command... I'm very confused. That's all, at present. Can anybody suggest an x-64 driver to be used instead of that HPVirtualCalculatorPortSetup.exe?
Best regards
