HP 1996 Annual Catalog
Hi,
I am in the process of scanning the calculator/handheld-relevant pages from the annual Hewlett-Packard hard-bound catalog books to add to the PPC Archive USB drive (check here for more info) and realized that between 1968 and 1999 (the final HP book), I am missing the 1996 book. Would anyone know of an online source of the 1996 catalog? Neither hparchive.com nor hpmuseum.net have the 1996 issue and my personal collection (between 1975 and 1997) is also missing 1996. I also checked eBay and many years are for sale, but not 1996.

If anyone knows of a source of the 1996 book or has the book and would be willing to lend for scanning, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Jake

RE: HP 1996 Annual Catalog
Jake,
I have two 1996 EduCALC catalogs from 1996: #71 (stapled 8 1/2" by 11" 67 pages) and #73 (stapled smaller format 6" by 8 1/2" 47 pages). I don't have #72. I could mail these two catalogs to you if you want to scan them.

Hi Ross,
The PPC Archive already has all the EduCALC catalogs right up to the final one (#75), with the exception of issues #9 and #13. I've been searching for them for years :-) The item from 1996 which I really need is the HP annual catalog.
Thanks,
Jake

RE: HP 1996 Annual Catalog
Hi Jake,

If you are referring to the “Test & Measurement Catalog” (hard-bound book of 668 pages), I do have a copy of the 1996 catalog.

However, I could not find any information about calculators in this book. The calculator models do appear in the Model Number Index, all pointing to page 563, but I turn to this page and can see only information about Cables & Adapters. Nothing about calculators!

Am I doing something wrong?

I have similar catalogs for some earlier years which do contain information on calculators and computers, but not this 1996 book.

Perhaps calculators were covered in Test & Measurement Catalog during a period, and later moved to a different HP catalog. Anyone in this forum knows?

Yes, it is the "Test and Measurement Catalog" of which I refer. I've scanned all the issues up to and including the 1988 edition, and there have been as many as 40-50 pages related to calculators and/or peripherals in some of them. I should briefly review the 1997 edition to see if there might be none in there as well. I'll report in on that as soon as I get a chance.
Thanks,
Jake

RE: HP 1996 Annual Catalog
Hi,
So I briefly checked the 1997 book and indeed could NOT find any references to calculators at all. There weren't even any listings in the contents or the model-number index. Even the section on computers was extremely abbreviated....much more so than those in the 1980s. Go figure.

In any case, if any references turn up in the 1996 book, I'd love to get images of those pages.
Thanks,
Jake

I have in my hands the Test & Measurement Catalogs for years 1989, 94, 96, 98, and 99.

I have visually scanned every page of the 1996 catalog could not find any contents relating to calculators, even if the subject “Calculators” does appear in the Alphabetical Index and the different calculator model numbers of the time also appear in the Model Number Index. But all of them are pointing to a page with no information whatsoever about calculators.

The same thing happens with the 1994 catalog.

The 1998 and 99 catalogs also don’t contain any info on calculators, but the subject and model numbers no longer appear in the indices.

The 1989 catalog does contain 4 pages om Calculator Products, and 10 pages on Personal Computers and Terminals. It seems that somewhere between 1989 and 1994 the contents related to calculators and personal computers were removed from the Test & Measurement Catalog.

RE: HP 1996 Annual Catalog
Beside the full Test & Measurement Catalogs, there were smaller catalogs called "HP Basic Instruments Catalog" in the '90s.
There were no calculators inside them (the closest somehow related item was the Logic Dart that was using the same LCD as the Series 48).

However, there is a curiosity in the 1997/98 Basic Instruments catalog.
A calculator was used to illustrate a typical test bench with HP oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies etc, and guess which model was used?

A 48GX ? A 32SII ?   NO, a HP-41C , in 1997 !

(click here to download a full image of the French pages).

Even on the original document and with a magnifier glass, I can't be sure of the exact model but I suspect a basic 41C.

Of course, no more HP-IL, and not yet USB. It was still the time of HP-IB and RS232 in instrumentation.

Yes, a 41C.

RE: HP 1996 Annual Catalog
I am likely not going to get this entirely accurate, but it might be helpful anyway.

Sometime late 80's HP decided to build a specific sales org - I think it was called "02" and this was where all accessories in the HP portfolio was supposed to be handled (Branded cables, Floppies, Cases and Dust-Covers etc-etc) - Think of it as a Tele sales Catalogue and you'll be close

This was also including some of the smaller handheld meters (Fluke?).

They got their own catalogue and that could be the reason the T&M annual "bible" no longer shows what is looked for here.

When exactly this happened - not sure, likely it was late 80s

I would have expected that around 1996, they'd have included the relatively-new HP-38G and perhaps the 39G when it was released. Too bad that inclusion of calcs in the books seemed to have ceased.

Thanks for everyone's help on this one,
Jake
