I toyed with doing this a couple of times. I'd have gone a step further and merged the function tables too. The 43S firmware would have gone this way -- assuming there is still a big table of functions.

Merging the functions was easy, I'm not sure about the function tables, but perhaps that's only because I'm not as familiar with the code as you are. It sounds like a good idea, I might look into it later.
