OK then – so let's design a better algorithm. The continued fraction approach is known, what kind of different method would you suggest?

By the way, I just tried it on the HP35s:

706 [/c]
2 [√x] =>  1  239/577  (=816/577)

99 [/c]
[pi] =>  3  14/99   (=311/99)
