Dear all
Is that a possible solution?

list2mat(mat2list(seq("x"+string(k),k = (0 .. 8))),3)

[["x0","x1","x2"],["x3","x4","x5"],["x6","x7","x8"]]

I do not have the option to change the strings in quotes or symbolics.
