Wanted - classic card reader "spring" - Johnboy - 03-04-2019 06:07 AM

Somehow I lost one of the two copper (brass ?) springy things from a HP67 card reader.

Can anyone help me find a replacement ?

Thanks
John

That might be a hard one to find short of totally cannibalizing a dead unit (the HP65 uses the same type springs). I remember reading a thread somewhere on this site where a fellow had made one from some thin shim stock. One might even be able to use some springy plastic stock.

Not having an HP-67 or HP-97 due to the horrendous silly prices asked (although I did have a totally dead HP-97 which many people kindly tried to fix - I eventually donated it to Valencia Science Museum!), I don’t know the size of the spring.
Would a spring out of (1) a retractable pen (2) out of a battery compartment or other sources fit?

You can build your own ....
I produced and already successfully used home-made spring clips.

I just found my recordings:
11 mm long, 2 mm wide, made from 0.1 mm thick copper foil.

Cut and bend in the shape you see from the other one you have.

Thanks Guys, I do have some thin brass sheet somewhere, I'll have a go at making a new one out of that.

Cheers,
John

You may want to anneal your metal of choice to make cutting and shaping easier, then temper it to give it the spring you're looking for. Check the web for instructions, and scrounge some old clockwork discard for a more suitable material.
