latest ROM version for HP 50g - samo50g - 10-01-2018 07:15 PM

Hi, what is latest ROM version for 50g calculator? Any link to download files (with instructions how to make upgrade if it differs from upgrading to 2.15)? Thanks.

It is 2.15.

Have a look at: https://www.hpcalc.org/hp49/pc/rom/

I know Smile but it was discontinued back in 2015.

mine has just arrived, yet to open the box, quite exciting.

i had 28S so i am familiar with what those small boxes can do. In 1986 having a S28 was like driving S-class mercedes ...

Smile

I had Casio programmables then, not quite the same.

I've been experimenting with the emulators (16, 42, 48, 49/50), and have a DM42 on order too, just for fun.

Will be interesting to compare my new 50g with my Prime, and Casio CG50/CP400, although I will mostly use them for different things.

RE: latest ROM version for HP 50g - samo50g - 10-02-2018 04:22 PM

so you have Prime, too. Why did you buy 50g then at all?

That's a fair question Smile

Number of reasons, really:
  • I'll use the Prime more for graphical, and perhaps more algebraic/symbolic/CAS stuff, although I'm interested to explore the CAS features of the 50g
  • I've been evaluating the Prime against my Casio CP400 (and CG50), and I'd like to add the 50g to that. it's possible that I might eventually sell one if I find i'm exclusively using one in particular. but I doubt it.
  • I wanted to play more with RPN usage, and RPL which is new to me. I know the Prime has an RPN mode, but I get the impression it's not intended to be used exclusively. And no RPN in CAS mode I believe, either.
  • I will view the 50g more as an extension of the line of traditional line/stack-based RPN calcs I've used in sims, like the 42/48, rather than as a graphical tool.
  • I have a bad habit of collecting calculators, and Oxford Educational have just a dozen or so new 50g left in stock, and I think they're the last in Europe. Couldn't pass that up Smile

I have both. I prefer the Prime but have to admit that, for some problems, RPL can be easier to code than HPPL. RPL is harder for me to read, though, even if I'm the one who wrote the program!

I see.
Recently I bought 50g at Oxford E., too. Smile

I will most probably use 0,1% of 50g' capability. My 3-y. son broke my 28S which was more than sufficient for me. Used 28S cost ca 100 eur, new 50g cost 170 eur, so it was not a hard decision Smile. For my work and "serious" analysis I use LabView software on PC. I am sorry if I disappointed anybody with my non-ambitiousness.

Well, if you are not in need of the CAS, and you are happy with the 28 functionality, I'd say the latest ROM for your 50g could be newRPL.

I had no idea NewRPL existed until this last couple of days, and as I have a small selection of 50’s at my disposal I’m gonna give NewRPL a try

Please explain in more details or in another words. I do not get the point. Thanks in advance.

aaaaaah, i see. no way. as a very modest user I am extremely happy with ROM 2.15 and with "out of the box state". beside that I like equation editor which is apparently not present in this newRPL.

You could always flash it back to the stock ROM

yes i know but i tell you I am so non-demanding user that I am satisfied with "anything", thus what came with my calculator will serve me till the end of my life most probably. i purchased 50g just because it uses RPN and it solves and plots equations .... some more things like converting units (BTW i am extremely frustrated because 50g does not have a list of names of units like 28C but only units themselves).

these programs will help you with the management of the units Wink :

UTool
http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=4612

A complete set of unit utilities (utools). Includes a full-screen menu for fast access to 54 (49g+/50g) or 42 (HP 49G/48gII) user-selected units, a configurable inverse UBASE command, handling of general non-SI base units (cgs, English, Planck etc), re-implementations of MUC and other HP 48 unit utilities. Requires ROM 2.00 on the 49g+/48gII/50g.

Unitman
http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=4275
http://page.mi.fu-berlin.de/raut/WR49/Unitman.htm

Allows a complete customization of the UNITS system. One may add user-defined units to the unit categories. User units are treated like built-ins, i.e., the famous 3-fold functionality of a unit key applies to an integrated user-units as well. In addition, one may reorganize a units menu, i.e., reorder it or purge not needed units. The same can be done with the whole bundle of unit directories to which new ones may be added ad libitum. Now contains HTML documentation.
