HP Prime G2 firmware..... - stefos - 08-25-2018 07:40 PM

Hi everyone,

Do I have to update my firmware with my new Prime G2?

I will be receiving it on Monday of next week.

Thanks,
Stefos

When you install the connectivity kit, IF there is a firmware update, it will prompt you to update the firmware.

Thanks Dr. D

Just wanted to make sure I didn't brick an expensive piece of equipment.

It is actually completely impossible to "brick" a G2. In fact, the assembly line uses the connkit to flash empty, never written firmware flash chips and CPUs with firmware. This is a change from G1 where a deletion in the first few flash blocks could "brick" as you've said. That also being said, I've only ever seen ONE actaually bricked unit. Every other case where we analyzed units at the factory other was some other fault or failure that had nothing to do with firmware.

The only time a unit is unrecoverable is some other electrical component failure of some kind. In that case though, firmware would be the least of your worries. Smile

Yes, there will be an update for you to install as we needed a bit of time to resolve a problem with the datatstreamer USB not talking, also a few other minor fixes that made it in past the factory release.

Probably yes but … never mind, CK is your friend Smile

Hello,

Actually, you could brick a G2.

The only thing to do to do so is to correctly write "bad" data in the code part of the flash.
At this point, the bootloader would load incorrect code in RAM and start execute it.

If the "modified" code is in a rarely, or non critical part of the system (a rarely used CAS fuction for example), you will still be able to use the calcualtor and update it...
But if the corruption correspond to an OS part, or a driver, then the calcualtor will crash on boot all the time Sad

This requires writing data correctly to the flash (every flash sector has ECC in it), which would be hard to do for a user, only a very serious system bug is likely to cause this type of problems...
Should the flash become "simply" corrupted (beyond ECC capacity to repare), then the bootloader is supposed to load the 2nd SW image, which is the "HP" bootlaoder and will request an update.

Should all load fails, then the NXP ROM based bootloader will take over and be detected by the con kit which will update the calculator.

In the case of a trully bricked unit (bad data correctly programmed in flash), there is still a way out.
Open the calcualtor and reboot it while shorting 2 data pin of the flash chip. This will cause every flash read to fail ECC and force the NXP bootloader to take control. At this point, you can update the calcualtor.
This happened to me a couple of times during development.

Are you sure that that's all?
No JTAG type re-flashing?

Hi,

Now that my HP Prime is here from the Netherlands, I could use some help:

How do I navigate to check to see if it's actually a G2?
Is there an HP Prime G2 manual somewhere?

This didn't come with connectivity software so I don't know if another firmware build is coming.

Please help, those who know.

Thanks,
Stefos

P.S. This calc is somewhat cryptic..........yes, I know about programming and nesting.

RE: HP Prime G2 firmware..... - DrD - 08-27-2018 09:10 PM

You probably already discovered it: [Help] Tree | About | hardware version ?

Since I left the HP Prime at my parents apartment I have to test this on my laptop
Errors?

Press the physical [Help] key in the upper right corner of the keyboard
Select from the touch display menu row [Tree]
Tap on the text at about "Prime" of this: [+] About HP Prime
Read the Hardware version <- should be different from old A, B, and C

BUT ALSO
Third Row second column key with [Shift] [Mem]
then in the display tap soft menu [Info]
See the Memory and Storage <- should be higher than 64 MB and 256 GB
if the G2 indeed is also twice the size (RAM/Flash)

Hi CyberAngel,

It's the Prime G2!

I appreciate your speed and courtesy sir/ma'am.

Thank you,

Sir Veli it is and you're welcome!

What are the reported RAM/Flash sizes? [Shift][Mem] tap [Info]
I'm so very eager to know!

No I was too high minded to search under that...

= No wonder I was terrible with programming!!!!!

LOL

Actually my applied logic teacher got a wood or metal sliver and it traveled thru his body and almost got into his heart.
Needless to say, the replacement teacher was TERRIBLE and my subsequent programming classes saw me floundering as my base class, Applied Logic, was lacking sorely.

Sir Veli Smile

The Memory is 246.53 MB
Storage is 460.59 MB

Where can I get the actual manual for this version however?

I got the most recent manual from HP however, Is that it?

Thanks,
Stefos

Yes, that's it.
Also you can download the PDF manuals separately.
I suggest that you get - if you don't already have - the PC Emulator
then...select from PC Emulator Window the PC Menu: Help
Quick Start Guide and User Guide as a PDF are accessible
On my PC
C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Prime Virtual Calculator\docs

Hi Stefos

How to buy it in the store, and ship to the United States to Miami?

RE: HP Prime G2 firmware..... - stefos - 08-27-2018 10:58 PM

Hi Cyber Angel,

I noticed a new firmware for HP Prime & the G2 also.

It seems like it's stuck.
Is this normal?
I don't know if the application hung or not.

Thanks again,
Stefos

Update:
I just refreshed the application......It was stuck.

Updating like a charm Smile

Easiest way to know if it is a G2 in hand is turn it over and look at the back. There is a G2 inside a circle on the back below the HP logo.
