Hello,
I have only been very recently interested in the spike/Spice family and I was wondering wether one CAN use these calculators only with the charger and without any battery pack. I saw many ebay adds for these calculators been auctioned as untested but With a charger.
Thanks a lot for your information. Best regards.
No!
AFAIK the Spice series (HP-31 through HP-38) has the same power supply design defect as the Woodstock series (HP-21 through HP-29). The HP-33E/33C Owner's Handbook states "Do not attempt to operate the calculator from the ac line with the battery pack removed". Do not plug a charger into these models without a known good battery pack installed! In fact, to be on the safe side, you should recharge the barreries with an external charger.

While we're on the subject, how hard is it to find an external charger for these and for the classic series. I have an external charger for my HP-97, but I'm scared to death of plugging my HP-65 in after frying the ACT chip (I think) on my other 97.
