Is it possible to run Free42 on a Win10 touchscreen pad?

(I have not yet even figured out if its possible to get a 'older' win type desktop too!)

TIA

Sure! I do it all the time. The keys on the screen are live. When you touch them, they react just as the real calculator's would.
It's not clear to me how to install it into the Win10 environment.

Just go to the website, download it and run the downloaded file. Does your pad run full Windows 10 or just an IoT version? You need the full version.
Yes, it runs really well. I've got it running on a GPD Pocket now, and it's ridiculously cute.

Although probably worthy of a separate thread, I'm finding the GPD Pocket a very good hardware platform for most HP calculator emulators. emu71 is particularly interesting on it, because it's about the same size and only a little heavier.

Edit: aw, nuts, Google didn't let me embed the image from Google Photos. Trying again with a URL from my domain.
Hi Tom:

Thanks for the reply. I suspect it may be an IOT version - as it's a ridiculously low cost touch screen.

I have been able to run the HP42 app from the download folder, but I'm hoping I can make an icon on the Win10 screen. If not, perhaps I'll just keep it open. It woudd be even more awesome if I could get the skin to fill the screen.

It does indicate, 'Windows 10 home edition'. I find nothing in the settings to 'Install an app'.

I stuck my copy in a directory and made an alias for the desktop. I haven't tried getting it on the Start Menu, but I suspect something like this would do it.

Yeah, I need to look at the other skins. I'd like it full screen on the Pocket.

I do not find a 'desktop' on this win10 machine; just the large chicklet/metro type screen.

What they're showing in the video at https://www.indiegogo.com/esi/en/project...aptop--2#/ looks like standard Windows 10. If so, you should be able to put shortcuts on the desktop, or pin applications to the task bar. N.B. You can make the start menu (the metro-type screen) pop down by pressing Esc or the Start menu button. If the task bar is hidden, you should be able to make it appear by moving the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen.
I saw some info about the GPD Pocket the other day, and now I need one badly.

How does the size compare to a 200LX? What's the battery life like?

It's possible they shipped your tablet with Win-10 Tablet Mode enabled.

See here to disable it and return to the much less 'touch friendly' but usable, desktop mode:

Got it! I was able to get it out of 'tablet mode' and have a 'more regular' desktop. And the Free42 shortcut was already there!

The realistic skin does not look quite right - the bottom row of keys are cut off; but using the other skin and goinb back to realistic and the skin looks ok.

It would be nice to have the 42 cover more / all of the screen!

Thanks,
TomC

Take a look at the collection of skins on my web site: http://thomasokken.com/free42/skins/ -- you'll probably be able to find something there that will fit the screen better.

Do be aware, though, that the desktop versions of Free42 (Windows, Mac, Linux) do not have a true full-screen mode; they will not hide the window frame and will not stretch the skin to fit the screen.
Thomas:

Thanks; interesting skins; I'll have to try them out.
Regards,
TomC

Dave,
It's pretty cute. It's a bit bigger than an HP200LX. It just fits snugly in the back pocket of a pair of jeans (but don't try to sit down). To give you an idea of actual size, I think they just repurposed a small tablet screen to use as its screen, mounting it sideways.

Battery life is... goofy. I get a day's intermittent use with it, but it seems to crap out overnight if you sleep it instead of hibernate it. I haven't really tracked that down. I've got it set up now so it hibernates instead of sleeps when you shut the lid, and I'm much happier.

I've been a mobile computing kind of person since my father got an HP-65, so these little things fascinate me. I have come to the conclusion that it is an amazingly good toy, better than my phone for short email and texting via Google Hangouts when I'm at a cafe, but not anything I'd want to do "real work" on without plugging it into a better screen and keyboard.

Performance-wise, I think it would be better with something like Android (or maybe Linux, although I hear horror stories of getting that running on it and haven't tried). I don't mind Windows 10 as an operating system, but it just feels a little laggy in comparison with a similarly-priced tablet or phone. My main beef is trying to use the Windows mail app.

It is an absolute blast to run the various HP emulators on, though. emu71 and pyilper work great together on it.

I am very happy I bought it, but I'm not convinced it's fully baked. I'm working up a blog-post review, and when I get it done (tomorrow, maybe?) I'll post a link.
Cool, I'd be eager to check it out. If I hadn't just bought a new 13" Dell only weeks before learning of the GPD, I probably would have bought one. Smile
So, I've finally got things running on this Win10 pad (600x1024 or 600x800). In portrait mode, the 'Owens42large' skin almost fills the screen. It doesn't seem to adjust as the pad rotates, but nevertheless is quite usable. Next, I hope to try some code sharing with the DM42.

Tom,

I know you wanted to use it on the Win Tablet. But I would highly recommend picking up a cheap Android Tablet. I just got the Amazon Kindle 7" hd and free42 works great on it. It scales to fit the screen and then when I rotate it, I have landscape 42s (similar to a 11c/12c/15c). I have free42s on all my android tablets/phones and much prefer using it there as opposed to my Windows Winbook tablet.

Bill - how were you able to load Free42 onto a Kindle? I understood (perhaps incorrectly) that they could only install apps from the Amazon App store, and could not access Apps from the Android Play Store. If I can load anything from the Play Store, I'll have a Fire within a couple days.
