Hi, this is my first post and i have a question.

My family gave me, for use in college, One HP 50G.
however, two days ago for An Offer, my girlfriend buys me one hp prime for a price of 70 €.

The only drawback, is the model NW280AA B1S. Is it much worse than G8X92AA? What is the difference?
I have read a lot but I have not clarified. Is it better to return it to the store?

Sorry for my english

Welcome to the forum!
I think you should post your question to the HP Prime sub-forum, however. Also, you might get faster response there.

The Rev A (NW280AA) cannot support these features, which Rev C (G8X92AA) does support:
  • Connecting a wireless dongle
  • Connecting the StreamSmart data collection modules
  • Using SEND via USB to another Prime (receive is OK)

If you don't care about these features, the units are fully compatible; the Rev A units can upgrade to the latest s/w updates, etc.

What are you studying in College? If Math, the Prime may be better than the 50g, but if Engineering or Science, the 50g may be a better choice.

Hi,

Could you explain better the preference for the Prime for studying math?

I will start studying math this year and I have some HP's, like the 42s, 15c, 50g, some 48's

If the Prime makes difference for math, I would make some efforts to get one (very expensive in My country

Get the Prime, it seems HP won't release updates for the 50g anymore, if that counts.

These calculators should be good enough but you probably don't need a calculator. If in doubt ask your professors.
For an exam I once bought a cheap calculator that supported complex numbers because programmable calculators weren't allowed.

I think we are too used to smartphones and the way software "evolves" today. A calculator like a 50G should only need an update if a bug is present...

The prime is a different thing; I hope it will keep getting updates and new features.

Actually, the Prime is the same thing IMHO. Just its check and release procedure seems having been a bit sloppier. Confused

The Prime is the future of HP calculators and is here to replace the 50g, just give it some time.

Earlier "future" products of HP were challenging, too, at their time. I don't remember a similar amount of shortcomings in that matter. No offence to anybody, just an observation.

Except they were primarily:

1. Developed by huge teams of people in comparison.
2. Had much longer development time.
3. Had all the software in house and did not rely on 3rd parties to provide major components.
4. Had a fraction of the capability.
5. Were made by engineers for engineers instead of targetting a completely different group of people.

But yeah - very similar.

I'm afraid this is a "outdated motto" (sadly).
After some years working in after-sales support, I've learnt that nowadays companies prefer "delivery date" against "deep functional testing"... and many products are not considered "bug free" after a couple of "service packs" have been released.

The flagship of the 48/49 series, ie the 50g, is an example of that. And it's been 20 years, if not more.

It may be the future, but it definitely is not going to replace the 50g.

Let me quote Mr Wessman (from this thread: http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-936-page-5.html):

And from what I have been reading online, RPL is basically dead with the 50g. I don't think HP has another calculator around the corner, not for at least another 3 or 4 years, and if they did, I'd bet it'd be the Prime+ Smile.
Give it some time and we'll see the Prime do everything the 50g does, only way faster, better and more intuitively.
Just like most of the users of theses forums, I too own a 50g and can't live without it, but that won't stop me from welcoming the Prime.

So if it is right, I will not bother buying a Prime. I will wait 20 years , if I'm still alive.

I will be playing around with my oldie goodies in the meantime.

If the Prime is the future of HP calculators I'm not willing to give it any time at all. I'll wait for the 43S instead.
