Changing the "Sort by" to "Creation time" or "Last post" with "Order" "Descending" works fine for the first page.
Choosing next page however, the sort order reverts to "Ascending".

This is a known problem in mybb. The workaround is pretty simple though; as you move to each 'next page', just click on "Last Post" in the header and it resorts correctly, picking-up from the prior page at the right place and in descending order. Annoying, but workable,
