Calling Eddie Shore...I got the CASIO fx-CG50. Nice unit. I noticed that in your blog, you were happy to see that it could deal with complex numbers, even with trigonometric functions. I am not having success with that...how do I get this to work?
An example...sin (1+1i) produces a non real error, even if I, in setup, choose a+bi mode.

If I use sin 1+1i , it thinks I am adding sin 1 and i.
Have a look at chapter 2-35 in the FX-CG-50 software users guide. It describes what functions can be used with complex numbers.

Based on the blog I saw, I held out hope that the 50 had trig capabilities with complex numbers. After all, manuals sometimes do not get updated (or ignore capabilities...classwiz 991 U.S. Model manual gives no hint that d/dx and integrals are allowable in solve, for example). It is faster than the CG10.

Do you have any idea what OS 3.10 updated over the 3.0x variants?
You make a fair point about manuals not being updated. Casio seems to be particularly opaque when it comes to revealing OS update information.

OS 3.10 features:
- fx-CG10 restrictions on g3p/g3b file import removed
- fx-CG10/20 will use white fx-CG50 main menu screen
- In exam mode, fx-CG50 display brightness is set to level 1 instead of 0 (after inactivity, increased battery drain)
- [EXP] / [x10^x] key will output "x10" instead of "E" where possible
- Catalog includes QR code function to get help online for specific commands
- E-CON4 adds manual sampling function and can save sample data to CSV files
- 3D Graph add-in adds cone template and function input (Z graph, parametric graph, solid of rotation on X/Y axis)
- 3D Graph add-in adds trace function and can determine intersections and relationships among lines and planes
- 3D Graph add-in version 1.01 will work on OS 3.10 or higher (3D Graph 1.00 even works on fx-CG10 OS 1.00)

fx-CG20/50 AU restrictions:
- Only 4.5 MB of user flash memory and Picture Plot add-in not preinstalled
- No intersections and relationships among lines and planes in 3D Graph add-in

Unfortunately, trig functions of complex numbers no longer work. This probably a side result of the new OS (3.10.0212). I must have written my review before I upgraded the OS. I will note this in my review, thank you for catching this!

Why Casio why?

Trig functions with complex numbers will now have to use the work around (there are others):

sin (a+bi) = sin a cosh b + i cos a sinh b
cos (a +bi) = cos a cosh b - i sin a sinh b

Thankfully the ln and e^x functions still can work with complex numbers.

My "50" came with OS 3.02, and the trig complex number operations were not available.

Is the OS ROM at it's limit roomwise?
I don't know. Maybe it's to match with the other Casio calculators, the fx-115 ES Plus, fx-9860GII, and the fx-991 Classwiz?

Mine came with either OS 3.00 or 3.02 - I don't remember which, and as far as I remember, never supported complex trig. Perhaps it was a particular regional variant that supported complex trig functions? They are not mentioned in the English manual for OS 3.00.
I'm wondering if Eddie tried something like sin 1+2i instead of sin (1+2i). The first case would be interpreted as (sin 1) + 2i. This would produce an answer that looks like complex numbers are supported, but is really sin 1 which is ~.84 plus i. Sin (1+2i) produces a non real error. The Prime produces in home, ~3.17+~1.96i.
That is, the CASIO would produce ~.84+2i

The fx-115 ES PLUS and fx-991EX ClassWiz are even more limited in their support for complex numbers - four banger plus conjugates, absolute value, integer powers, extraction of real or imaginary part. No square roots (or other non-integer powers), logs, or exponentiation. (I don't know about the fx-9860GII, but I suspect it has the same complex number support as the PRIZM series.)
