That's because RPN mode lets you enter expressions in RPN not only in Home but also in Symb view (and other input form fields). For example, in Symb view in RPN mode, to enter 3*X+1, you can either type 3 'X' * 1 + then press Enter, or type '3*X+1' then press Enter. It's very similar to the 49G/49g+/50g in RPN Exact mode, which requires you to either enter expressions in RPN (with the variables quoted if they already exist), or in algebraic form in single quotes.
