[41CL] Hello from Sweden...
Message #1 Posted by Peter Laur on 1 Feb 2013, 3:47 p.m.

Just want to say hi to all 41CL users in the forum. Finally got my 41CL working (thanks to Monte) and it feels real nice. At present we are only 2 in Sweden having it, a friend of mine Bo and me...

Myself I had a 41C/CV back in 1980 and have been thinking of to get a 41 again for the past 30 years. Found a NOS 41CX from my friend Bo in Stockholm and later when we found out about the 41CL, we couldn't resist :)

Did just update my v3 board with the latest roms from Monte and wrote a simple newbie manual that might be of help:

http://www.openbsd.se/pharphar/41cl_upd_20130201.pdf

Here is the roms sorted I got from Monte:

http://www.openbsd.se/pharphar/41cl_rom.zip

And my compiled programs for xp:

http://www.openbsd.se/pharphar/CLWriter.exe

http://www.openbsd.se/pharphar/CLReader.exe

Else I am 54 years old, a hamradio operator with the call SM5HUA and into openbsd and computer security. Its real nice to follow the threads in here and see the old 41 is still alive and kicking :)

Until next, best regards: Peter Laur

Thanks. A newbie approach is always good to have I guess :) So easy to forget there is ppl around (like me) who need easy step by step manuals to do the updates.

Just take your time its all advice I can give. Took me 5-6 hrs doing the full update.

Peter,

Thank you for creating your "newbie" manual. I believe it deserves much more credit than you give it. I find it very helpful and am appreciative for the efforts you took to document your steps and share it with us. As you did, I also wrote down the sequences I used (as I installed some of Angel Martin's "modules") and checked the status as I went to confirm everything loaded successfully.

Your 41cl_upd file goes many steps further than mine, as you not only updated your CL with Monte's latest images, but you took the brave step of writing to Flash (something I haven't done yet). Thanks for helping to take some of the fear out of it! I'll study it before I begin << shudder & shiver >> :-)

As always, I also want to thank Monte whenever I have the opportunity for gifting us with his labor of love.

Matt

Thanks! I'm glad it might help and for me it worked real nice. In fact it all started when I was trying to load Angels PowerCL but couldn't. Monte found out some of the v3 boards hadn't Library4 loaded so that's what made me do it initially. Now I just use the following to load it:

alpha "804040-8120" alpha xeq alpha "YPOKE" alpha to load Lib4 and then alpha "PWRL" alpha xeq alpha "PLUG1U" alpha and its working.

So much left to learn but it's fun! About the fear, you have nothing to loose. Just thinking of all the times I have failed and learned the hard way how to do it :) I am still failing lots.

Wish you good luck!

Peter

Peter,

Thank you for this. I would note that it isn't strictly necessary to do the Memory Clear between the steps. Also, RAM is preserved, you don't need to keep copying YFNS to RAM with each sequence.

That said, it is certainly safer, particularly if you get distracted in the middle of something, to make each section stand-alone by starting with the Memory Clear.

If someone else is just breezing through the steps now that you have done the hard part, it shouldn't take that long to complete this process.

Any boards delivered in the future will have an up-to-date Flash image so this process will not be necessary, but as I continually get new revisions and new images, boards in the field will inevitably be out-of date (but still perfectly usable).

Thanks again for your work, Monte.

Thanks! Yes, its why I do it from scratch every time - to be sure I get it right from the beginning.

Just nice to be of help and the one to thank the most - wonder who it is? ;)
