HP currently has nothing comparable. What is there doesn't need a colour display.

But actually HP invented that class of calculators with the Xpander. It was just too early.

Hi.

Makes me remember when telephones where used to make/receive telephone calls... It will come the day people will borrow a calculator for computing something and the owner will ask: "Does it do that?"

Cheers.

Not too early, just killed by non-visionary management. HP's management has migrated from founders who made products because they thought it was a good idea to make them, to people who are too concerned with what the "consumers" tell them (consumers is in inverted commas because a small sample does not represent the market). Steve Jobs did not build his empire by making what the people wanted, but by making the people want what he made (most likely because he felt that what he made was a good idea).

The Xpander could have been in it's 3rd generation now (an upgrade around 2007 and a colour screen by 2010 or 2011) and been ahead of the pack.

Agreed, Bart. HP has lost it's "INVENT!" ethos, it remains only as an advertizing tagline.

that said, I will snap up any new RPN calculator HP produces.

Tim, pls let Meg know what I wrote :-)

cheers,

Hi Hugh.

Have you included the 39gII in this graph?

You can have only so many pixels when your screen is black and white (grayscale).

yes, the new 39sii means the HP goes up a bit at the end - which is good.

INVENT was not a bad idea, but it came with Carly Fiorina, the beginning of the end in hindsight.

Best regards, Alex

I like that very much. Can I borrow it? I'll be talking to some people (a lecture) about some related subjects. The English corresponding title might be: "Hardware - from its understanding to leading the technology market" (or something like this).

Thanks!

Jobs said: "you can't ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new."

Along the same lines, my favourite is: "People don’t know what they want until you show it to them."

Hey, guys, thank you both.

I'll use them all, I guess this is the kind of message that has been lost. At least in their inner meanings.

Cheers.

Of course you may, i will not hold copyright on it :-). Anyway it's just a re-wording of what has already been said (e.g. Philippe's comments).

AFAIK HP did marketing studies. As this was an educational tool, supporting teachers would have been necessary.

This is an interesting read: http://news.cnet.com/2100-1040-252597.html

Interesting read, but wrong.

Carly basically decreed "HP is not involved in education" and it was shut down 2 days before launch. No. other. reason.

They had spent a TON of time doing teacher training, working to get it approved for all major exams despite having a stylus, and had a LOT of very excited educators who were trained as evangelists from all over the world.

The Classpad needed to have a color screen in the first place, it looks way better than the monochrome screen the first editions have.
