Thanksgiving comes twice this year
Message #1 Posted by db (martinez, ca.) on 19 Nov 2012, 10:22 a.m.

got this this morning, from the DM-1XCC team:

"Dear RPN Enthusiasts,

The next step for the world's smallest programmable RPN calculators ever, is the Silver Edition.

Look for the special announcement of the Silver Edition on Monday, 26 Nov 2012.

We are excited and looking forward to sharing this step with you.

Best regards, Michael Steinmann"

They were long before talking about a version with an aluminium case. Maybe it's finished now, and hopefully it offers a useable keyboard this time. However, nice they're still in business. The voyagers apparently still have enough friends to base a business upon :-).

... and btw, I'd pay as much as I did for the DM15CC for their 15C emulation, implemented for the 15C LE. They did a perfect job here!

Got the e-mail four(!) times... :)

I am hoping for something different: I have more than enough Voyagers (and clones).

I got two emails, corresponding to the 2 calculators I purchased from them at different times, no doubt. Massimo, does that mean that you bought 4 calculators from them already?

Hi Katie, I bought two 1st-gen 15CC, then the full set, in new enclosures, when available. I used two different e-mail accounts, each of them got two e-mails this morning! :-)

enough of Voyagers?

If you have enough of Voyagers just give this a try: Hercules System/370, ESA/390, and z/Architecture Emulator and run MUSIC/SP on it. Sounds good. It will give you something else to play, not only that one-stringed Voyager-fiddle. ;)

Hi Mike, didn't we exchange our views on Hercules right here, several years ago? ;-)
I will give this a try once I will be able to setup another (probably virtual) system on which to install Hercules again: it's been some time since I last fired it up.

Thanks,
Massimo

Yes, it was you who pointet me to Hercules. Great fun! Since then I use Hercules, not every day but when I need something quick and by other means it would take more than a day or would be almost impossible, for example extracting the Voyager ROMs from some firmware files - alas I still do not have the HP-10C ROM image. (Thereby I saw that it was an unfounded rumour that Eric had changed the ROMs in a way they do run on Nonpareil. And it is also _not true_ that he added his own copyright to the ROMs once distributed with his great simulator.)

I may run MUSIC/SP on Hercules, but I mentioned it just for its 'sonorous' acronym. I realy lost my esteem for the host as it now runs on my little netbook with a performance of about 10 MIPS what is sufficient for what I do with it.

Until today your hint at Hercules was 2nd to none for me on this forum. Perhaps as it is somewhat off topic. For me it is not because I am able to run on "my" host the HP41 and the Voyagers - all except the 10C, no ROM at hand :(

Ciao.....Mike

Thank you Mike, I will give that musical os a try when I can :-)
For sentimental reasons what I really would like to revive is a VM system (but I doubt that I still remember something useful in order to run it).

Greetings,
Massimo

The latest VM you may run with IBM's mercy is VM R6. Some experts fiddled it to be more useful. There is also a VM380. Some tell that it is possible to run an evaluation copy of z/VM.

But, frankly, if you do not 'remember something useful in order to run it', I suggest collecting Voyagers, Voyager clones, and Voyager simulators. <VBG>

I started on VM/CMS, which I remember as a friendly development environment.

But of course you're right: if I can't use it anymore why bother? However I could just dig my old pile of manuals and try to get back on track! :-)

I will go on collecting, but I still prefer coconuts and derivatives over any voyager.

Greetings,
Massimo

With all its ancillary equipment I prefere the HP41 too, but inside the voyagers is an alomost identical Nut CPU, the simulation of it _is_ identical.

Surprisingly, I never got an email.

Hopefully whatever he is coming out with this time has a better keyboard, because my DM-15CC is unusable (plus the back won't stay on).

From all the complaints; i thought it would be kinda junky, but my second generation DM-15CC works way better than i expected it to. I even carried it around in my pocket at first. No problems. With my history of being the one in a million that gets a broken item, i was really surprised. I also dodged the bullet in getting three perfectly-working 15CLEs too, so maybe it's the number 15 that's lucky for me.

That idea that Thomas had about using their emulation in the 15cLE (or new 12 with an overlay by eric?) would be great, but why stop there? There's extra room. Wouldn't a 15 with whatever alpha characters it can display for global labels and the rest of the unused RAM in program memory be great?

So your units do NOT have the PSE bug and the power management issues? I think they must, so that plus other emulation flaws eliminate the possibility of any existing HP 15C LE being "perfectly working", in any conventional sense of that term.

I'd just seen what you mean. Sorry for deleting the post (I was not fast enough :-). Anyway, here is it again, for the record:

---------------------------------------------
So let me be the second one. The three units I ordered from SC came in perfect order. All had serial numbers starting with "CNA".

P.S.: Actually this had been reported already:

The 15CC actually has expanded memory and a nice extra :-). Doing more would probably require too much work on the original code, and I'd fear something breaks. The value of the 15, to me, is not only the wealth of functions but also its incredible reliability.

Really? I use mine regularly. Mine is one of the first batch, and the keypad took some getting used to. It seemed as if the top layer was not sticking down properly, but this has improved with time. I found a hard case that fits it perfectly (pictures), and it is now always in my pocket. To me, this is a true pocket programmable scientific calculator.

With encouraging comments that the current ones are better than the first batch, I am looking to treating myself to the silver edition.

I bought of of each five available, and received three e-mails. But I at first deleted all them without reading due to the subject line being very vague and spam-like. I've now gone to my trash folder and read this information.

BTW, Thanksgiving in 1939 was celebrated on 23 November officially (new 1939 "fourth Thursday in November" rule) in some places and in other places on 30 November (traditional since 1863 "last Thursday in November" rule).

I just got this mail: Dear RPN Enthusiasts,

The wait is over, the next step for the world's smallest programmable RPN calculators ever, the Silver Edition, is now available for immediate shipment.

Due to initial stock limits, only the first 150 orders received before December 10th will be able to ship to arrive in time for the holidays. Orders received after the first 150 will ship as soon as possible after January 1, 2013.

Silver Edition improvements include an easier-to-read display; even better battery life than the first generation calculators; improved keyboard; a titanium case that is currently available in three colors; a beautiful silver leather pouch; and a new flip-open black leather pouch. A full-color 4-page brochure will be ready shortly for downloading.

We are excited about this major step and invite you to take a look at our new website, www.SwissMicros.com .

Best regards, Michael Steinmann
