DM-15cc arrived Message #1 Posted by Ethan Conner on 14 Aug 2012, 4:18 p.m. My DM-15cc is here and i've had a chance to play with it. I can tell after installing a new battery that this will be just a collectable and not a daily driver. One of the screw posts came loose. The display is a little dim except at work where the bright lights help. The keyboard is better than i thought it would be but still must be operated with care to not press the wrong key. The display cover is touching the lcd in several spots causing that "rainbow" look. Considering the form factor, that it had to travel from China to Texas i would say a very impressive result. Thanks to Michael for all his effort. :)

Chine??? Mine came in a package handled through the Swiss Post and Customs, 18 days after I ordered all five versions.

My guess is that Michael had a factory in China make the PCBs and maybe the metal case backs, and then had them sent to him for programming and the front/back stickers. That way he doesn't have to guess how many of each model will sell since I believe the hardware is identical, it's just the firmware/stickers.

The first impressions are good except the keyboard could have been better in terms of contact pressure consistency and display a little more clearer and smaller. Good work Michael!

He kept the -15 for himself but I have the rest! I also have a -15 from their first generation and these new ones certainly have a better keyboard than that first generation. So far I have had very few problems. About the only thing I have noticed is the inconsistent alignment of the USB connector through the side of the case. I might have to take the back off to reprogram a few of these ones. I too had a few that had the "rainbow" effect but I have found that this issue has resolved itself over time. I am not seeing it now. There is one thing I don't exactly understand. Occasionally, the display will go all sparkly random pixels and needs to be turned off and on to clear. I suspect that it is actually a programmed feature that has something to do with a timeout but I have yet to figure out the exact relationship. I love that in the new F/W you can turn it down from 48 to 12 MHz since I don't need the quick computational power. I suspect that this extends the battery by a good deal. Yet to measure that though. Very cool little devices -- always have one on me somewhere! BTW: I can report that the -11 donor ROM is from the second generation that does not have the backspace bug. I have an original -11C that does have this bug.

Ordered July 3rd, but didn't make it to Indiana (USA) until today. Maybe the Customs Officials were playing with it for a couple of weeks :o) Unfortunately, I'm out of town today, so won't be able to try it out until tomorrow. Sigh. My two youngest sons may have it worn out by then.

He also warned me economy shipping might be a little slower than normal.

It doesn't seem to have the "rainbow" problem and, while the keys do need quite a bit of pressure, I was surprised at how nicely they click. I have noticed that sometimes the On key will click but not actually turn the calculator on or off, requiring another key press, but I'm really pleased with it, over-all, and wouldn't hesitate to get one of its siblings. When one of my posts came off, I just resoldered it (it was an easy enough job) and it hasn't come off since. Cristian

Yesterday I took out my "Praetorius" garklein recorder by Hopf that I played for quite a long time in my youth with a local renaissance consort ensemble, It was just for a hystorical ancient music instruments exhibition in a small town not far from here...............well, before to take there the small recorder I tryed to play it... Only after half an hour of exercises, and hundreds attempts, I was able to play a good scale and begin to really play it!!! Truly shirt pocketable size. The leather case which is made of genuine leather is actually better than the one from HP. Michael is apparently working on a HP-41CX. This will be an exiting micro calc. And, by the way, the micro 41 should be, at least, a CL with IR interface on board.....how, if not, could be replicated in "micro" the universe of the plugins suited for that system? But I've my reserves about the the size, as I told in a previous post, and the "full usability" of these pretty toys, sure JEWELS in a collection context. Maybe I need just to handle one of those ..and find that I was completely wrong, who knows? Edited: 18 Aug 2012, 4:14 a.m.
