OT - Arduino In Space from HP41 Hacker
Message #1 Posted by PeterP on 15 June 2012, 7:14 p.m.

Hi, I know I have been silent for a while but Space exploration has grabbed me for the last year, which I spent in Strasbourg at the International Space University.

And now, your very-own MCODE amateur friend has just launched a KickStarter campaign to put Arduinos with 25 sensors and 3 cameras in space and let people design their own code, application, experiment and upload it onto the satellite. Or steer the on-board cameras and take pictures.

Please excuse me for being so bold and thinking that some of you might enjoy this story, but I'd love to hear your thoughts and advice if you may be so kind.

Cheers

Hi Peter,

Let me be the first... (sure not the last) in saying welcome back!... and congrats on achieving this "space-ial" step.

Publicly admit I say this with a grain of "healthy" envy... ;-))

My very best wishes for you and your upcoming projects.

Cheers from Caribbean Sea.

Diego

Hi.

This is the first semester I found ways to teach my students at the local university how to program and use Arduino. The problem is that they are I.T. future professionals, and they know nothing about electronics, neither analogic nor digital. It's been a fair walk teaching them the basics in few weeks - electric parameters, measuring, components, prototyping with breadboard and so - then how to use it all with Arduino and how to program it. Programming was the easy part for them...

I asked them to propose at least a feasible project till the end of the semester, and while some of them have no idea of what to do, others are bold enough (naive enough?) proposing some time wasting designs that will not be ready till deadline.

Now you have given me some neat stuff to show them.

Many thanks for sharing! And congratulations! This is outstanding!

Best regards and success!

Luiz, Diego, thank you so much for your kind words.

Especially to Luiz - well, your class is actually one of our prime targets for which we created the $1500 package (which gives you 1 week on the satellite and the arduino with all sensors) and the $5000 package (which gives you all of the above plus 2 weeks crash-course in space, satellites, space-physics, experiments, etc). We want to engage students and "kids of all ages" and get them to realize that everyone can participate in that wonderous world called "space exploration".

If you want to know more, ping me directly...

(and now I'm going to shut up with this totally, totally OT, very sorry guys!)

Cheers

peter
