Re: WP 34S Overlay Available For V3 Message #4 Posted by Jeff O. on 11 Jan 2012, 8:45 a.m., in response to message #3 by Paul Dale
I removed one of Eric's original matte finish overlays from a 30b. I wanted to replace it with one of the new satin finish ones which I thought looked much nicer. My intention was to attempt to remove it more or less intact so I could hopefully re-install it on a 20b that I had kicking around. Removal of the key-plane sticker was not difficult, I just lifted a corner and started pulling. Any hope of re-use was quickly dashed, as the very thin sections between the keys stretched and broke. Once I got the whole overlay off, there were a few places where the adhesive was left behind. This was easily removed just by rubbing with a soft cloth. To remove the key labels, I lifted a corner with a knife blade and pulled them off. Quite a bit of adhesive was left on many keys. Since the keys are not nearly as smooth as the keyboard plane, I did not think I would be able to simply rub the adhesive off. Rather than risk creating a gooey mess trying to somehow clean the keys, I decided to just leave it. I hoped that leaving the adhesive residue on the keys would be OK, since I was going to apply new labels anyway, so there would just be more adhesive in some spots. I then installed the new satin finish overlay and key labels. Over the next few days, various corners of various key labels kept popping up. I would rub them down, then later another would do the same. I eventually rubbed all of the key labels fairly aggressively with some smooth, round-ended tool, which seemed to adhere them. If I had it to do over again (which it appears that I will), I would find a way to clean any adhesive residue off of the keys.
