15C LE just arrived
Message #1 Posted by Keith Beyer on 23 Dec 2011, 12:44 p.m.

Just got it. Nice. Lighter than the original 15C. Has wiggly f and g keys like the first run. What did they supposedly fix from the first run?

Some keys won't register on some calculators (probably due to dirt).

The wiggly shift keys cannot be fixed easily, and I think the only problem about this is that they are the only keys outside the matrix. If all keys were 'loose', nobody would have complained about that, imo ;-).

Several problems remain, unfortunately.

Is this from the lot that most recently showed up on buy.com? I haven't been able to get to mine yet and I'm thinking "uh oh".

No, I bought this on the HP website on 12/21/11. The standard shipping was super fast. I assume this is the second run of calculators, but I thought one issue they would fix was the wobbly f and g keys. It's weird because all the other keys are fine. Everything works well as far as I can tell.

The f and g are wobbly on every LE because they are stand alone where the rest of the keypad is tied together. If you are waiting for a "fix" on that you better get comfortable. lol

Are the corresponding keys wobbly on the current 12c+?

Does anyone know of a teardown with photos on the 12c? Perhaps that could be used as a reference on how to fix the wobbly 15cle keys.

The problem is also related to the molds used for those keys. As the molds wear, the keys will have a greater tendency to wiggle. There is more info on the f and g keys in an earlier thread. Basically, the wiggle varies, is within the expected tolerance for the keys, and is not something that HP will be correcting.

I thought I saw some posts here and elsewhere from people who had the jiggly key problem and HP fixed it.

HP "fixed" (i.e. replaced) units which had keys that did not register when pressed or required excessive pressure to cause to register.

I opened up my new 15c LE yesterday. The shift keys jiggle a little, but no more than on some other calculators I've had and I wasn't bothered then. I still need to fiddle with it to get the hang of using it. I think I'll stick with the 32sii for everyday use, but this purchase was a good one.

My complaint with the wobbly f and g keys is this: They have been making the 12C for about 30 years WITHOUT wobbly f and g keys, so why do something different with the 15C? I bought a 12C new about 10 years ago and all keys were solid then and still are. I can only guess they are using a different manufacturer for the 15C, and somehow the production of those two keys is different??

I'll be ok using the calculator, and I'm not saying it is a fatal flaw. My concern is those keys will fail eventually.

Thanks,
My findings are fairly minor, but probably good to get them all in one place.

Seems like this one you found ought to be in the list too.

Thanks, I've updated the list again.

I'm not that all that hopeful that any of these issues will be addressed, HP seems to be selling out of the 15C LE's awfully quickly even with these bugs.

Are you sure ? My original HP 15C weighs 116 grams, whereas my several HP 15C LEs weigh 121 grams.

Well, do the math: if "several" together weigh 121 grams, each one must be lighter . . .

I'm curious how you were able to order more than one, since they have a limit of one. Did they change that since the time when you ordered ? Just for fun I tried to put two in my cart and it wouldn't allow it. I've already ordered all I want, so this was just idle curiosity.

Edit: I see they have them on ebaby again, so I assume you bought them there with no limit on quantity.

Anyway, I like to see them undercut the price gougers. Looks like SC has only managed to sell two out of 100 to just one buyer so far at $250.

Correct, did an Internet search which brought me to their Ebay page, Buy.com. Ordered and they processed 2, wanted for personal use. I did see later the Buy.com order page with limit 1 and all the scalpers everywhere else with the $149 and $199 prices.

They appear to be out of stock now, but if you order on the HP website and enter the coupon save15hp, you get $15 off. So, with free standard shipping, that's $85 for the calculator plus sales tax, which is what I paid.

Yes, checked there first and were out of stock, but said check back soon, so maybe HP will get more. Before I found the Buy.Com units I emailed HP Customer service to see when they might have more. 2 is my limit though for this model so I am set. I think I have 3 or 4 35S and still have a few HP classics left and newer such as 20S, 48GX, 49, 50 and business models though sold most classics out on ebay from 2003-2005. Have a pile of non-HP left. Since HP charges state tax not much difference for me on price.

Last time HP said "check back soon," it took 3 months for them to restock. It's like us hispanics when we say mañana (tomorrow), it really means someday in our lifetime.

Perhaps they are concentrating on the 42SII or 42S LE! ;+}
