Unable to start and run EMU41 on new 64-bit Processor Laptop running with Windows 7
Message #1 Posted by Antoine M. Couëtte on 17 Dec 2011, 2:37 a.m.

Hello to all,

This post I am sending to our Forum further to a suggestion just e-mailed to me by Jean-François Garnier, our well known and highly regarded developer and "father" of EMU41.

For the past years and up until one week ago, I had been able to run EMU41 (a MS-DOS program as I understand it to be) on all my previous laptops using WINDOWS VISTA, WINDOWS XP, WINDOWS 2000 and maybe also some previous versions of WINDOWS. My EMU41 setting up and running procedure had always been quite simple and consistently the exact same one : I just stored all EMU41 files in one same dedicated EMU41 Folder, then left clicked on the "EMU41" icon and it worked perfectly well.

As an example, my last laptop was a SAMSUNG Q45 32-bit processor running with VISTA. It ran at about 600/700 times the speed of a conventional HP41, which is absolutely wonderful and quite highly appreciated - if not a must in some cases - for running some of my self-developed ASTRONAV Software which will usually take up to more than one hour for Lunars on a conventional HP41.

Congratulations and Thanks again for EMU41 to you Jean-François !

*******

My brand new laptop is a LENOVO "THINKPAD" T420 with a 62-bit processor running with WINDOWS 7. Any time I attempt running EMU41 through the very same settings as indicated here-above, I am getting the following message :

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check you Computer System information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact your software publisher."

Such Warning Message seems pointing out towards 2 directions :

- Windows Version, and

- Processor type.

Actually, when compared to my former SAMSUNG Q45 32-bit processor running with VISTA, my new laptop :

- is running with a different and more recent Windows Version, i.e. WINDOWS 7, and

- is also running with a different Processor, namely a 62-bit Processor.

*******

Is my EMU41 current problem then due to the new WINDOWS 7 Version, and/or to the new 64-bit Processor I am using ? or to any other reason ?

Just for the case where it might be simply a WINDOWS version problem not related any way to the Processor type (be it a 32-bit or a 64-bit Processor) is it still possible to run "modern" laptops directly in MS-DOS mode instead of in WINDOWS mode ? If so, what is the applicable (laptop starting ?) procedure ?

*******

Thanking you for Your Kind Attention, and thanking you in advance for any help to solve this unexpected and new problem, I am remaining

Most Sincerely Yours

Merry X-Mas and Happy New Year 2012 to you all !

Antoine M. "Kermit" Couëtte

PS : A last personal note now : after having been laid off from my previous BOEING B757 Company which went bankrupt, I am now quite happy flying the AIRBUS A340 from MAURITIUS ISLAND to Europe, Africa, China, South East Asia and Australia. Somebody has got to do it, anyway !

Hello Antoine!
In order to execute DOS mode 16 bit programs under Windows 64bit OS you may try to use DOSBox
If I am not wrong there were reports of EMU41 running smoothly under DOSBox...

Season's Greetings,
Massimo

Hello Massimo,

Nice to read from you in Milano !

Thank you very much for your reply.

I will have to wait for about 10 days before I have sufficient time to implement and try the DOSBOX on my laptop.

Meanwhile, if anybody in this forum has got some ideas as to why EMU41 does not seem to run on 64-bit WINDOWS 7 computers, please feel free to contribute.

Meanwhile also I will be flying twice from Mauritius to Europe, starting with ... Milan MXP where I am scheduled to land to-morrow afternoon Dec 19, 2011 at 16:50 Local Time (MK30 flight from MRU to MXP, then at the Melia Milano hotel, downtown Milano). That's a small world, isn't it ?

Have a Great Day,

Merry Christmas, and

Happy New Year 2012

Antoine

Well, the answer is quite simple:
Microsoft has completely removed the support of any 16-bit programs (DOS and Windows) in their 64-bit Windows versions, so there's no chance for running them (unless you use an emulator like DosBox).

That was really driving me crazy for awhile, since I had a lot of old Turbo Pascal programs that wouldn't run. Then someone here put me onto Free Pascal and I recompiled and all is well again.

I'm wondering if the source to EMU41 is available and if it can be recompiled into 32 bit code?

Yes Bill, I've moved to Borland Delphi for my TurboPascal programs. ;-)

Well, the source is available here:
http://www.jeffcalc.hp41.eu/emu41/index.html
It's written in C so it should be possible to port it to 32-bit, but this would be quite a lot of work I'm afraid.

Indeed!
Alas, this is not the best part of the year to find the time to meet...
Next time, maybe? ;-)

Seasons' Greetings,
