Anyone Updated (re-flashed) a 12C 30th AE?
Message #1 Posted by linear on 13 Oct 2011, 11:55 a.m.

It seems that the 12C 30th AE is being shipped with older firmware (2009-07-02). At least, that's what my 12C 30th AE had (purchased Sept 25, from HP Home & Office).

Has anyone flashed their 12C 30th AE with newer firmware (eg 2009-11-19)? If so, did it work out OK?

Katie is the first person that reported this in this forum. She is also the most likely candidate to have already flashed her machine. I am sure that she will jump in and reply when she sees your post.

But, FWIW, there should be no issues with it working with the newer firmware. To the best of my knowledge the only differences from a 12C+ are the box and the 30th AE on the front.

Cheers,

Marwan

I'm jumping in :)

I haven't re-flashed my 12C 30th AE yet, for no good reason other than it's just a collectible for me. However, re-flashing it with the latest firmware has to work as Marwan said, there's nothing special about the AE other than the packaging, faceplate and back plate.

The latest firmware (I have 2009-11-19) gets rid of the SST/BST problems and some others. However: the low battery indicator does not work, there is a 2 second timeout when running the keyboard self-test, and this program locks it up (you need to turn off the calculator to stop it):

01 1
02 AMORT
03 GTO 01

Those are all the bugs in the latest firmware as far as I know.

Last year at HHC 2010, prototype HP 15C+ calculators were passed out for testing and finding bugs. I assume that if HP issued firmware updates in the last year prior to the HP 15 LE release, then those people who did them would have experience at updating this platform.

Were there any firmware updates issued by HP for the 15C+ during the last year?

Yes!

Flashing is SAMBA and the cable. Of course access to the web site and the new software was required (NDA protected).

Maybe HP will set up a public site with access and a disclaimer ;-)

Gerry, your 41 as well as Eddie's will be completed next week. I am paying back to the company my five days in a row off for HCC!

Cheers, all

Excellent and thanks a million, Geoff! Eddie was over at my house this last weekend to see if using my USB-to-RS232 would get his 20b back up and running with WP-34S firmware using his Vista laptop. We were successful.

So, how do you like your steak? When next we meet, I owe you dinner!

Now, when will the next batch of 41CL cards be ready? I'm ready to go! :-)

How does one get access to the web site, and execute the required NDA? Is this only available to those who attended HHC2010?

Hello Linear,

nice moniker; actually I was refering to the 15LE beta testing team with reference to the site. That was an NDA from 2010 and a signup page for anyone wanting to beta test.

It happens though, that the cable handed out at 2010 and 2011 and by Gene Wright is the correct cable for the 20b and 30b and 12C and 15LE.

With reference to the 12C and 15LE updates, I was commenting that I hoped the updates would be similar to the testing site, but public domain.

Cheers, Geoff

... and the 10bii+

This is a great little calculator with a fantastic display and keyboard that gets no respect from this forum. While it's native firmware has algebraic logic it would make a cheap platform to re-purpose and it has more digits and annunciators than the voyagers.

I picked one up as a door prize at HHC 2011. I am surprised by how much I like it. The keyboard isn’t bad at all. Tim tried to explain the technology to me, but I did not really understand. I don't think there are any metal domes involved. I'm sure it would have brought howls of protest if used on the 15c LE, but it is not a bad alternative, in my opinion of course. Maybe I’ll try flashing wp34s onto it and see what happens. Actually I would, except I don’t have the 10bii+ firmware to flash it back.

I would be beyond surprised if the WP34S firmware ran on the 10bii. The keyboard and display are just too different.

I would not expect success, I would just like to see what happens. Would some keys still work? Anything sensible in the display? Probably not, but if it could be done with no harm (i.e. the original firmware could be flashed back in), it might be fun to try.

Yes, I agree, if you could get it back to 10bii state it might be interesting trying it.

Thanks for the clarification, Geoff. I also hope that the 12C and 15C LE updates will be made available!

P.S. The moniker comes from the fact that I am a "linear IC designer". Guess I shouldn't playing with digital calculators! :-)
