HP 50g trilogy. The new HP 50g Blue (and II)
Message #1 Posted by Pablo P (Spain) on 17 Sept 2011, 7:30 a.m.

Hi all! Probably this information is interesting for some collectors. A year ago I posted the HP 50g blue here http://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/hpmuseum/archv019.cgi?read=173119
Now, one year later, it seems that HP has released a new blue layout. At least here in Spain. The source is from an official HP dealer in Spain: http://www.ict-iberia.com/datosftp/calculadoras/imf_1-ListaPreciosCalculadorasHP_sept2011_web.pdf
Note that the new blue has the same model number that the old one. What do you think?

Just to clarify, I think the new blue one is the one on the right, not the one that says "NUEVA". Correct?

I've got one of the old blue ones and it's rather grown on me. Based on the images above, I prefer it to the new blue one. Having said that, the old blue looks better in the flesh than in pictures, IMO, so perhaps the new ones are equally attractive.

Must resist urge to buy another bloody calculator.

<with a smooth convincing voice>Go ahead .. get a another calculator. A calculator is your friend. It will not judge you or tell you lies. It is always truthful to you and does what you ask. So come on .... just one more calculator. No harm in that!!

The 50g is one thing, and the 35s is another.

Correct, it is the bloody one on the right.

I have a feeling that a re-styled 50g is in the works.

To all:

Sure hope an upgraded 50G is in the pipeline.

Two things I'd like to see:

- Backlit screen like TI Nspire and Casio Prizm

- Large ENTER key in the "correct" place (as in "Classics" and the HP.35S).

My $.02 for now.

And traditional lines rather than "TI curves."

I would definitely buy one, or more.

That would be great. I never liked the small enter key on the 50g. I really liked the 48g keyboard.

For some unknown reason, I have sold so far some more blues than blacks - but then I might have been lucky.

Here's how they look like in reality:

Just ordered a blue one from you. I'll bet we never see them over here...

If statistically significant, this looks like another victory of fashion over ergonomical design.

Those blue models are absolutely terrible!

They seem to be motivated by the same sort of idiotic "artistic" nonsense that places no value on contrast, legibility, and usability. In other words, the same sort of U.S. West Coast decadence that produced the ugly ineffective color schemes of the Pioneers, HP-48G, and HP-38G, to name but a few. Now we can add the European HP 50g. No surprise there!

Have you actually held one?

The blue is actually extremely legible including for those with Protanopia and Deuteranopia - which, yes, I tested against.

Just because you don't like the color doesn't mean it does not have legibility, contrast or usability. A crappy jpg with low color calibration will not be a good stick to measure against.

Having never seen the so called "new" one on the right I can't say anything about it. You can blame me for exact color combination on the blue one, but not for the desire to do it. It was demanded that "we need an Avatar Blue calculator" and so I had to do something.

I just tried to make the best of a bad situation. :-|

I second this having bought one [1] from Jose - it is really clear and legible. I find myself starting to prefer the "white keys" models: I just picked up a 39gs[2] in the light grey color and it is better, IMHO, than the dark grey 40gs.

[1] 4 actually, for friends, which might party explain why he has sold so many!
[2] which is astonishingly good value for money
