Long term storage question on 15C LE
Message #1 Posted by nick lidakis on 11 Sept 2011, 10:53 p.m.

I purchased 2 units with the expectation that one would be put away for a future user and I was wondering: Are the batteries pre-installed? I assume if yes, I should open the packaging and remove them if the unit will be in storage for, say, over 7 years?

The CR 2032 cells are installed. But none of the packaging of the 15C-LE is sealed (there's no shrink wrap), so it's a simple matter to open, remove the cells, then put everything back just like you got it.

There's going to be firmware upgrading needed for both machines, so keep those batteries handy.

You might also want to consider throwing some dessicant packets in there to keep moisture down.

That depends on where you are. My father told me that one of the biggest non-cultural adjustments he had to make when we moved in the 60s was that while back in Japan the computer center was dehumidified to prevent decks of punched cards from turning to mush, here in Colorado the computer center was humidified to prevent decks of punched cards from turning to dust.

Long-term storage has been discussed here before, in at least two threads and with several valuable observations:
