Goodbye!
Message #1 Posted by George Bailey (Bedford Falls) on 16 July 2011, 6:08 a.m.

I had a pleasant time here with most of the forum members. Thanks a lot for that.

Hi,
Please reconsider. I've had some heated interchanges with another forum member, and both of us still post here.

Remember that a forum is a very limited means of communication as there are no other clues such as tone, expression and body language. Add to that different languages and cultures ....

Please take this with the kindness it is intended.

If he's so thin-skinned that the posts of one person scare him away, it's probably for the best. I don't want him having a heart attack or something if it happens again.

Eric, I hope the two opponents take the chance of discussing their case privately through the forum email and come back with a final opinion later.

Some parties do NOT provide for e-mail contact in their forum profile. Paranoia rules.

I must have missed the thread that prompted this action. I read through the 34s-lite thread but did not see anything that would warrant a departure from the forum. What happened?

It's here, ending at message 30. Let's hope George returns, he's a good guy.

Still...the contents of that thread are rather mild (very mild, in fact), compared to heated threads found here and at *all* other public forums.

The problem with this forum as distinguished from many others is that there appears to be no moderator (s) to make sure that forum rules are observed. It's pretty much a free-for-all here, and sometimes you have to step back to keep from getting run over.

Still, despite some of the crap I've taken from a few members here, I find it extremely informative and interesting.

Actually it is not a free for all. Dave does moderate but he is very quiet about it.

Furthermore, this topic lends itself to a more collegial old pre-internet usenet sort of feel...

Please don't leave! From time to time some discussions may become heated, and it's difficult for some (including me, perhaps) to find the right word or the exact tome to transmit the proper meaning in our messages. Lifestyles, languages, local culture are diverse; and these are factors of communication style.

I like myself the idea of a "34S --" and think, perhaps from lack of detailed knowledge of 34S internals, that taking some features out may be possible and may make sense. It may free resources (granted, what for?) and result in a less dense keyboard. But it may well be that this is complex to implement, and the design team surely know better.

(It seems that the most frequent word in my message seems to be "may"...)

George the best thing to do is just not get drawn into replying to anything that "he who shall not be named" says since he can be pretty insensitive to what forum users ask or say. It won't hurt if you keep checking back for topics that interest you or some bit of information that's shared that you'll find useful. Take care.

It's what I call a "superiority complex." When someone believes they are so much more intelligent that the rest of us, they seem to have difficulty tolerating our (to them) non-cogent utterances.

Let it roll off your back. It was simply "lost in translation" and don't worry about it.

Bill "lost in translation" is exactly what this was.

Deal with it internationally every day at work. Cultural differences create confusion and that is what I saw from the outset of the postings referred to.

Try sitting beside someone from a different culture. Just the two of you with nothing in common for fifteen hours in an enclosed room. Some cultures are more aggressive, others passive, and language construct causes most of the aggravation.

Come on back George, and to bad you don't have an email address listed.

Also, George Bailey of Bedford Falls. My favourite christmas character.

Cheers, George, hope to read a post from you soon.

Geoff

That's putting a nice spin on it. Now, I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I have seen similar exchanges before, and I certainly see more than cultural differences going on.
