Battery problems with an aging 12c

I have a 15 year old 12C made in Singapore. After 14 years of faultless service it began using up batteries rapidly in the last year. They used to last years and now I am down to a few weeks. Is this typical? I thought it may be that they place where I was getting the batteries was supplying me with old ones so 2 weeks ago I purchased a set from Radio Shack. They worked fine until yesterday when the screen went dim but the battery warning indicator did not flash. I called HP and was told to take the batteries out for more than 24 hours and see if that helps. In the mean time I tried the batteries from someone else's unit and mine seemed fine. Is it just time to get a new 12c????
