HP 82240B. Infra red printer for HP 42---HP 50g
Message #1 Posted by Stuart Sprott on 24 Apr 2010, 7:31 a.m.

I am just curious as to how many people still use the HP printer that works off the HP 42, HP 48, and HP 50g. I got my printer back in 1991 and it is still going strong.

I was told the other day that HP no longer make this printer.

Hello,

I still use this printer with my Hp-41Cx and 17BII+.

It is the most high tech gear I own.

At work, I prefer the Hp-81 (No thermal paper needed :-)

Use mine with the 17bii, especially at tax time.

I have 3,

Two because I needed a back up and the third cause it was free.

Use it in cockpit with my 42S or 41CX depending on which one I take with me.

Cheers, Geoff

Use mine with 28S. Got myself a backup, just in case.

Hi;

I use both A and B models when in a hurry (and they are working fine, too), but I actually prefer capturing the IR output from the calculators with an HP48G. Then I upload the corresponding ASCII-related file to the PC and edit the final text as needed, with the aid of adding any extra text and using columns to add comments.

As long as I have the time to, of course...

Cheers.

I own several of them but I never used them. I also have some printer wreck in the cellar, most of them with a defective printer head.

One reason for this maybe also, that I use a real HP48SX and real HP32S only under some rare circumstances. Most times I have a HP calculator emulator somewhere around.

Since end of 80ies, beginning with the HP28S, I used different PC adapters to capture the IR output directly on the PC.

Nowadays I use this adapter only to capture ROM images. The last time in October last year to capture the AA ROM image of an international 17BII.

Cheers

Hi Christoph

I noticeed that you stated "I used different PC adapters to capture the IR output directly on the PC."

Can you give me a lead as to where you can find the PC adapters.

Regards

Stuart

The first one in 1990/1991 was a commercial DOS program from a German company called "PrintHP". Later I rebuild the hardware interface and then the signal decoder under DOS. "PrintHP" quit working with the early 486 processors (they were too fast). Last successful try of my own DOS development was on a Pentium III/850MHz under pure DOS.

For the last 10 or more years I use a selfmade Redeye->Serial converter with a microcontroller. I wrote the controller firmware, but the copyrights don't belong to me.

I don't know any commercial product (except the HP48) that can capture the data on a non printer device.

Cheers

Christoph

Can that be changed? Can you ask for permission to release it?

I am also interested. A month ago i started a more or less equal project. I build a red-eye receiver with a micro controller and it displays the received code on 24 small 5x7 dot matrix displays. It emulates the original ROMAN8 character set. It looks promissing but the software is not stable yet.

Excellent. If you need a tester, then please let me know.

Yes, I know this. The interrupt service routine capturing the data is quite tricky. The DOS and the microcontroller solution are written in pure assembler, so the code is quite unreadable. Both codes were made in the early 90ies and were massivly tested with corrupted codes made by a special transmitter.

I'm thinking about publishing a C source code under the GPL made for Emu42. In 2002 I tried to emulate the printer device, but because of limitations (timer2 inaccuracy) and speed problems (emulator has to slow down to get proper timing values) the code wasn't stable enough to publish. Nevertheless the code contain all design elements and error correction of the assembler code.

Here's the C source code of the redeye decoder. It's published under the GPL.

Hi, Christoph;

just to 'say' THANKS A MIL!

Now letīs just read the code and allow it to run in our brains to depict it...

Oops! Thinking out loud...

Cheers.

I'm using mine on a regular time frame a few time every month with the 17BII, 27S, 41CX and sometimes 49G+

I really missed the IR print connection on my favorite daily calculator (32SII). Does anyone now why the scientific Pioneers didn't got the same IR output like the business calculators?

The best RPN scientific calculator ever made is a Pioneer with IR output to the HP82240. That 22-year-old machine is called the HP42S. It can generate audible tones also. Useful.

Also the HP 27S has an infrared printer interface. Although it is not RPN it is a scientific calculator. All Pioneers with the Lewis processor (HP-17B, HP-17BII, HP-27S and the HP-42S) have this interface.

Hi;

the HP10B and HP14B did not offer IR output as well, and they are financial calculators.

Cheers.
