Did We Miss The 20th Anniv. of the HP48SX?
Message #1 Posted by Jake Schwartz on 15 Mar 2010, 4:34 p.m.

Hi,

I think we may have missed acknowledging the 20th anniversary of the HP48SX on 6 March. Boy was that an exciting time. The U.S. HP calculator conference in 1990 was held in the Chicago area between June 1st and 3rd and Bill Wickes and Eric Vogel visited from Corvallis. It was a really fun weekend, extending to the CHIP group meeting on the following Wednesday. I remember that the intro of the 48 really legitimized RPL to the point where most of the locals in my area who held off getting the 28C or 28S finally jumped in with both feet, migrating from their HP41 systems. Bill's book, "HP41 HP48 Transitions" was a big help.

You lot on this forum may have forgotten :-P but it was a topic of conversation at the HPCC meeting in London two days ago. I had hoped to put an HP48 related article into the latest Datafile, but, sadly, there was no space. It will have to wait for the next one.

My first HP calculator, and still my favorite! I got mine in October 1990, and of course it's still going strong.

I bought my HP48SX in early 1991 at Educalc. Richard Nelson personally verified it had the latest firmware. I had to sell my HP28S first so I could afford the 48. I still use it several times a week. Works and looks just like it did like new. Steve

Jake,

Time flies bad fast. Yes of course!! I remember attending the meeting and giving a talk about the HP-48SX RPL. It was a very cool meeting.

On the way back home, I remember singer Linda Ronstadt was on the flight as she went from Chicago to Roanoke, VA. I sat facing her at the airport for an hour thinking "here is another Linda Ronstadt look-alike!" She was the real deal!!!
