Plexiglas replacement
Message #1 Posted by Alberto Fenini on 2 Feb 2010, 7:54 a.m.

ciao a tutti !

I'm trying to restore a security cradle for the woodstock units, I have had the locker replaced (the key was missing) but it still has the red plexiglass broken. Browsing on the web I have found this company, http://www.acrylite-shop.com/US/us/index.htm , it's an Italian company but sells worldwide.

The question is, would it be a good replacement ? Could it be useful for other restoring purposes (calculator display, HP-01 display) ?? Any advice or any other ideas for restoring/replacing plexiglass parts would be really appreciated !

take care, Alberto

I've made several replacement printer windows for the Topcats and the 82143A and 82162A printers using 1/16" Plexiglas. This material is thin enough to score with a knife and break. I then file down the edges to match the original window. It works and looks fine, I don't bother with the top lift edge nor the 3 little bumps that keep the paper away from the window, but this would be easy to add if you wanted perfection.

ciao Katie,
thank you very much for your reply, did you replace some of the red plexiglass ? Do you know I can math the same color that is used for the classic, or woodstock display ? (btw, it looks to me the all the hp led display share the same color)
take care, Alberto

I haven't used red Plexiglas to replace windows in calculators but I do have some around for other projects of mine and it's a pretty good color match for typical LED windows used in older calculators. 1/16" might be a little on the thick side but some manufactures of acrylic sheet make 1/32" and may sell that in red too.
