Looking for on-line HP-41 manual
Message #1 Posted by Thomas Okken on 18 July 2008, 5:26 a.m.

Hi all,

Some time ago, I found a site that had an HTML version of the HP-41C/CV owner's manual. I think it was hosted at some Dutch ISP (.nl domain), but, unfortunately, I can't remember the URL and I haven't managed to find it using Google either.
Maybe the site doesn't exist any more, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about, could you send me the link?
(I want to give the HP-42S manual the same treatment, and while I could do that on my own, it would be nice to have some examples to learn from... That HTML version of the HP-41C/CV manual was by far the best conversion to HTML I have ever seen.)

For you 42s manual project, make sure you know about copyright issues...

That's the one -- thanks!

I'm going to ignore those issues. If some humorless HP lawyer decides that they absolutely must prevent that document from leaking into the public domain, they can send me a cease & desist notice, and that will be the end of it... But if they don't, yay for everyone (and yay for some long overdue comprehensive manual for Free42, heh).

You might want to consult with Mr. Hicks, the curator of MoHPC. He's had some issues with HP that you may find enlightening to know about... ;-)

Thanks -- good point!
Since Mr. Hicks has apparently found a way to distribute electronic copies of old HP manuals without incurring the wrath of HP, this is something to think about before I start spending countless hours HTML-ifying the HP-42S manual. Even paying a few $$ on royalties for each copy would still be better than not being able to distribute such manuals at all.

That guy's work is really outstanding!

As far as I did check so far, only page 6a from the table of contents leads abroad. BTW, sorry for my ignorance, but does anybody know how to go from one page to the next or previous, without selecting a page number?

Going to next/previous page seems not to be available. There is always room for improvement! :-) I suggest a Prev Page/Next Page/Up link at the top and bottom of each page. Up would go to the first page of the section.

Use TAB inside the page to select the appropriate link, then ENTER (what else HP afficionados?). Works perfect in firefox...

I have never been able to access the web page - I keep getting an "Error Loading Page" message. I can only access a Google snapshot of the web page taken 0n July 10th. Can anybody confirm that the site is still available?

On the contrary I have exactly the same error trying to connect from Canada using either IE6 or Firefox (last Friday and again today). I was also only able to locate the same Google cache from Friday July 10th.

Now that I am back in the office after a two week vacation, I am able to connect to this site from my office PC. My home ISP is sympatico so maybe they have something to do with the problem. I thought initially it was my antivirus (PC-Cillin) but have discounted that possibility. But there is definitely a problem as it happens at home with: Win98/XP/Vista and IE or Firefox, Linux and Firefox, as well as MacOSX and Safari.

Thanks for the info. I'll try it from a non-Bell location later.
