Recommendation for Repair of HP-11c?
Message #1 Posted by Steve Seto on 22 Aug 2006, 2:36 p.m.

My faithful (but old) HP-11c has died. Upon installing new batteries, I got the dreaded "Error 9"... repeatedly.

I've seen occasional postings about folks who will repair HP's, or who have had one repaired. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good repair person in the US?

Thanks in advance...

There are a couple of posters here who offer repair services as well. I have used none of them, but all have solid reputations as I can tell.

However, before you send off for repair, try a simple short the battery terminals with batteries still installed ie. use a paper clip to bridge the batteries (your actually also shorting out the cells momentarily as well). This is what is even recommended in the appendix of this model calculator. I might suggest to short the terminals out w/o the batteries installed first, then install, turn on and if no change, THEN short the batteries in the calculator.

Ron: Thanks for your helpful suggestions, but already done, both ways, as you recommend. (I consulted my Museum DVD, too!!)

I can get the calculator to respond (so technically I suppose it isn't really DEAD dead), but it always ends up displaying Error 9. This includes the self test as well as simply waking up after replacing the batteries...

FixThatCalc.com.

I have come to regard Randy as something of a patron saint of the dead and moribund HP calculator. He resurrected my beloved (but long unused) 41CV for well under a hundred bucks, making me a very happy guy.

But being a saint or messiah has its drawbacks. Randy has more work than you can shake a dead cat at, and there is a bit of a wait--at least six weeks, longer for problems that are tougher to crack or have a need for special parts.

But I recommend highly that you write him, and he will get back to you with at least a preliminary impression of the sort of work that is needed. I get the impression he has seen it all by now.

best,

Les

Les: Thanks! I'm not in any big rush, so I'll contact Randy and see what he says...
